Emily in Paris Season 4: Release date, plot, Photos, & Everything we know
Last updated August 27, 2024
After season four ended on a cliffhanger (again!), fans of the show are only left with one question: will there be an Emily in Paris Season 5? So many things were left unanswered, so there has to be, right? Well, we finally have an official announcement that the show has been renewed for a fifth season.
Show creator Darren Star told Tudum, "We’re thrilled with the incredible response to this season of Emily in Paris and excited to return for a fifth to continue Emily’s adventures in Rome and Paris!" He also clarified that the show's name isn't changing. He said, "Emily’s going to have a presence in Rome. It doesn’t mean she’s not going to be in Paris, but she’s going to have a presence in Rome."
Lily Collins, who plays Emily, appeared on Good Morning America and broke the news of the renewal. She told Tudum she was looking forward to her character's relationship with Marcello going forward. "Marcello is a whole other adventure that we want for Emily because we ultimately want Emily to be able to have a better work/life balance. We want to have Emily be able to smile without condition. We want to see her beyond her vacay mode. And he comes at that perfect time," she said.
Previously, in an interview with Digital Spy, Collins said she "hopes" there's more. She said, "Rome is insanely stunning, and I love it so much. But I would love to go to the countryside, or maybe the coast and experience that. See where it goes with Marcello. But also have all of her French co-workers and Mindy come back out, because it would be so fun to see them all experiencing Italy for the first time in a way that I experienced Paris season one."
Furthermore, Star had said, "I definitely think the show has a life beyond next season. It’s not necessarily conceived as a final chapter. I think like every other show, it’s a rich ensemble. There’s no end in sight until everybody feels like it’s time to end."
However, the possibility of season five may have been confirmed quietly at a charity auction. At the 30th Annual Gala Cannes fundraising event on May 23, guests had the chance to bid on various items, including a walk-on role in the fifth season of the show. Presenter Paris Jackson said, "One of you is going to leave here tonight with a walk-on role in Season 5 of the hit TV show Emily in Paris." Netflix hasn't officially announced season five yet, but the fact that a walk-on role is being auctioned off for charity suggests that all roads lead to Rome!
After that, Amfar has updated the item description on its site, which reads, "As part of the walk-on role, the winning bidder will have the opportunity to spend a day on set in Paris during filming, contingent upon season 5 pickup. To tide you over until then, the winning bidder and a guest are invited to attend the Los Angeles première of Emily In Paris Season 4 this August."
Almost all of the existing cast is expected to return for a new installment, including:
In an interview with Glamour after season four, Star stated that he is unsure how much Camille (Camille Razat) will be in season five. "I think the idea that she thought she was going to have a baby, and then to have dealt with that disappointment, and then to discover there was a way to do it with Gabriel that he didn’t want to pursue—[as a result], she realized this was something that she wanted to do on her own. So I don’t know what’s going to happen with her in season five. I’m not sure how much we’ll see of that story right now. But that’s sort of where she’s heading," he said.
In a post-season interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Star said that Emily's move to Rome will not be permanent. "We’ll spend some time in Rome. But she did not change her Instagram handle to Emily in Rome. They can be in more than one city, and Emily can spend time in Rome. She can spend time in Paris, too. She’s not leaving Paris," he said.
He added, "I think we will definitely see more Emily in Rome if we have a season five. Emily [is now] there. There’s an office, and I think the story is taking us there for the moment. So we will spend more time in Italy, but it doesn’t mean we’re leaving Paris."
He also recently confirmed that season five will explore Emily’s relationship with Marcello, saying, "I feel like they have a real spark and a real connection and a real romantic connection. A lot of that’s going to continue to play out next season."
We might also find out who Alfie's girlfriend is next season.
Major spoilers ahead!
In the last episode of season four, titled "All Road Leads to Rome," we see that Emily is seriously considering Sylvie's job offer to run their new Rome office. While Gabriel (after finally getting his Michelin star) realises his feelings for Emily and asks Mindy for her Rome address, we see Emily in her new apartment, which is part of a former family palazzo. She starts to change her Instagram handle from "@EmilyinParis" to "@Emilyin…." Rome? We never really find out, as Marcello knocks on her door. Then, the unthinkable happens: Emily leaves her phone on the table and heads out with her new love interest to explore the city. We see them ride away in a Vespa, in typical Roman Holiday style.
Here's a brief recap of the other characters and where they ended up:
Mindy broke up with Nico after disagreements about her career, and then ended up losing the Eurovision gig. However, after performing for a crowd in Rome, she lands a job offer in Shanghai as a judge on Chinese Popstar. Gabriel finally gets a Michelin star. After his breakup with Emily, he grows close to Genevieve, but eventually turns her down. In the end, when he hears that Emily might be moving to Rome, he decides to fly to Rome to give their relationship another chance.
Sylvie wan't exactly thrilled that Laurent rekindled his romance with Genevieve’s mother, so she goes to Rome to have a fling with her former film professor. After having a false pregnancy, Camille realises she really wants to be a mother. When she asked Gabrielle to adopt a child with her, he turned her down, so she decided to start her family as a single mother. Alfie now has a serious girlfriend, and he briefly reunited with Emily on Christmas. He also urged Gabriel to go after Emily in the end.
