Discovery Plus is launching in just a few weeks, but we're still torn about whether or not the service is worth it or not. Let's dive into it!
On January 4th, Discovery Plus will launch in several countries, including the United States. Although the offering will be slightly different, and the price will be adjusted per country and currency, the gist of Discovery Plus is the same - tons of shows and movies and documentaries, plus a good portion of originals too.Â
The price for Discovery Plus has already been announced. In the US, the service will cost $4.99 per month for the ad-supported version or $6.99 per month for the ad-free option. If you don't mind the ads, you may get a really cool deal here.
Discovery Plus will offer content from a bunch of networks - HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Investigation Discovery, OWN, Animal Planet, BBC Planet Earth, A&E, Lifetime, History, Travel Channel, Sci, DIY Network, the Dodo, and the brand new Magnolia Network.Â
The folks at Discovery estimate you'll have access to over 55,000 episodes of over 2,500 current and classic shows from the above-mentioned TV brands.Â
You'll also get to watch Discovery+ Originals, live streams, and loads more.Â
Is it worth it? That's the big question! Well, the answer depends on quite a few variables. There are Pros and Cons to this service.Â
If you're already subscribed to a live TV service, it may not be worth it to pay for Discovery Plus, no matter what original shows they have. If you also have a subscription with the regular Hulu on-demand, you may also not get a lot of extra content since the shows are already available there as well, specifically those from HGTV, for instance.Â
However, if you want to have unlimited access to all these networks and you can add another $5 or $7 to your monthly list of bills, then go for it!
While you could subscribe to Discovery Plus, there's also the option of subscribing to Verizon if you're not already a customer. Verizon is an exclusive partner for Discovery+ at launch, so you will get 12 months for free with the Play More and Get More Unlimited plans and 6 months for free with Do More Unlimited and Start Unlimited.
Existing customers of Verizon Unlimited, Go Unlimited, Beyond Unlimited, and Above Unlimited, which have been discontinued, will also get 6 months of free Discovery Plus.Â
