One of the quality-of-life changes a lot of Instagram users have asked for is the ability to tag friends in videos. The social media platform is finally testing the new feature for some users while everyone else is limited to photo tagging currently. The video tagging feature is quite different from photo tagging with a dedicated button that links a list of tagged people in your videos.

Tapping on the link button takes users to a new page with the title “People in this video.” You can manually add all of your Instagram friends who you want to tag in the video, and they will be alerted via notifications. The videos are not copied over to the users’ profiles under the tagged section, unlike photos. The feature is currently being tested for mobile users only, and it is not available in beta for the web version.

There is no official word from Instagram about the test, and no plans have been revealed about a larger rollout to bring the feature out to all users. The company revealed in a statement “We’re always testing ways to improve the experience on Instagram and bring you closer to the people and things you love.”

Instagram has recently been rallying its efforts to bring more features to the platform around video content. The social media platform has introduced IGTV recently to allow longer videos to be posted on channels and connect a large number of people in video chat sessions. The company is also exploring options to enable better video discovery via the user interface. Video tagging has been long requested by users, and it’s great to see the social media platform finally testing it. We can expect to see the feature to roll out to all users in a few weeks.
