The story follows Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan. Her world is shattered when her husband Masa and their son vanish in a mysterious plane crash. In the aftermath, Suzie is given Sunny, a charming robot designed by her husband's company. Though initially resistant, Suzie slowly bonds with Sunny, and together, they delve into the dark mystery behind her family's disappearance.

Sunny is Apple TV+'s second collaboration with A24 and Jones, following Sofia Coppola's film On the Rocks. Jones also recently starred in Apple’s popular series Silo, based on Hugh Howey’s best-selling dystopian novels.
