The latest season of Doctor Who is reaching its thrilling conclusion after the dramatic events of The Legend of Ruby Sunday, where the Doctor’s old enemy, the long-teased The One Who Waits, finally makes his grand appearance. In episode 7 (the first episode of the two-part finale), we discover that The One Who Waits is none other than Sutekh, a villain from the classic Pyramids of Mars episode. Gabriel Woolf returns to voice Sutekh, the God of Death, 50 years after his first appearance. Sutekh reveals himself in an Anubis-like form at the end of the episode, warning that he will bring death to the Doctor and Earth, having been hiding in plain sight on the TARDIS.

From the trailer, it’s clear that Sutekh plans to wreak havoc across the planet, destroying everything and everyone in his path. The Doctor must race against time to stop this powerful enemy and send him back to where he came from.

Another big mystery that fans hope will be solved is the origins of Ruby Sunday, the Doctor's companion. Since joining the Doctor, Ruby’s past has been shrouded in mystery, especially regarding her abandonment by her mother as an infant. 

Sutekh hinted at a possible connection, claiming he is "the father" and the God of Death, which raises questions about Ruby's mother possibly being "the mother" and God of Life. Fans are eager to learn who she is and why she has kept her identity hidden.

While it's expected that the Doctor will ultimately save humanity from Sutekh, how he does it and what he might lose in the process remains to be seen. One thing is for sure: Gibson is set to return for the next season, so Ruby will survive this epic showdown.

The season started with Doctor Who's 2023 Christmas Special, which took viewers on an adventure to the Church on Ruby Road. The special explored the origin of Ruby Sunday and her eventual involvement with the Doctor. 

In the premiere episode Space Babies,  a random TARDIS ride takes the Doctor and Ruby Sunday to a deserted baby farm in 21506, where they must save abandoned infants from a monster known as the Bogeyman. As they unravel the mystery, the Doctor begins to suspect that Ruby's parents' secrets are woven into the very fabric of time and space. 

Episode 2, aka The Devil's Chord, sees Ruby longing to witness The Beatles' debut, only to find themselves in a music-free 1963, drained of melodies by the sinister Maestro, a child of the Toymaker who plans to destroy the universe by manipulating sound. 

In Episode 3, the Doctor is trapped on a landmine and must rely on Ruby to prevent a catastrophic war on Kastarion 3. The next episode, 73 Yards, sees the Doctor vanish in modern-day Wales, leaving Ruby haunted by a mysterious old woman standing 73 yards away throughout her life. This leads to a shocking twist in time. 

In Dot & Bubble (Episode 5), Ruby and the Doctor navigate a future colony dominated by social media, using virtual communication to save Lindy Pepper-Bean from giant bugs. Rogue, which is the sixth episode, brings a Regency-era adventure inspired by Bridgerton, where the Doctor and Ruby team up with the bounty hunter Rogue, played by Jonathan Groff, to defeat shape-shifting Chuldur.
