House of Spoils follows an ambitious chef (Ariana DeBose) as she opens her first restaurant on a secluded estate. While facing the usual chaos of running a kitchen and the pressure to succeed, she also battles intense self-doubt. However, her challenges extend beyond typical restaurant troubles as a malevolent presence tied to the estate’s previous owner begins to sabotage her at every turn.Â
The film taps into familiar horror territory, where the protagonist’s mental state unravels in a new environment. But House of Spoils introduces a ghost story into the mix, adding a supernatural element to the psychological tension. One warning she receives is to avoid using the previous owner's garden, connected to eerie "witch lady" stories. Ignoring this, Chef’s decision triggers unsettling occurrences, from bugs infesting the food to her own deteriorating grip on reality.
Much like psychological thrillers such as Black Swan, the film explores the dangers of perfectionism, but with a supernatural twist. The haunting presence becomes an integral part of Chef's unraveling, creating an unpredictable blend of horror that sets House of Spoils apart from other genre films.
Prime Video has released the official trailer for House of Spoils, showcasing the early days of a chef's new restaurant. Under her meticulous watch, the restaurant initially appears to be on track for success. However, things take a dark turn when she discovers a moldy piece of food, leading to a downward spiral in her mental state.Â
House of Spoils is the latest film written and directed by Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy, known for their previous work on Blow the Man Down. This marks the duo's second feature film and continues their successful collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios and Blumhouse Television, which began in 2019.
Produced by Greg Gilreath, Adam Hendricks, Drew Houpt, Alex Scharfman, Lucas Joaquin, and Jason Blum, the film also benefits from the expertise of food stylist Zoe Hegedus, whose notable credits include Midsommar, Poor Things, and Dune. Hegedus crafted the film's kitchen sequences, aligning with her specialty in food styling for movies and TV series.
Filming for House of Spoils began in August 2022 in Hungary, with Savage Cole, Krudy, Chris McCumber, Jeremy Gold, and Chris Dickie serving as executive producers. According to Cole and Krudy, the story was inspired by the struggles and personal growth of finding one’s voice as a leader.
