The plot of Honey Don't! revolves around Chris Evans, who plays a cult leader, while Margaret Qualley plays a lesbian private investigator looking into him. Aubrey Plaza is in the film as well in a currently undisclosed role. It is confirmed that Qualley’s character will be the protagonist while Evans’ will be the antagonist. 

This will be the second film in Ethan Coen and Trica Cooke’s lesbian B-movie trilogy, which began with 2024’s Drive Away Dolls, where Qualley also starred. However, other plot details are still under wraps. In an interview with i-D magazine, Margaret Qualley talked about how she had to dial back her “natural Scooby-Doo” habits for this movie. She also described what this role demanded from her. The actor said:

“To be a little more suave than I am, more mysterious. I tend to want to diffuse things before they even happen. [Whereas] Honey, she’s like honey — she’s skillful, she’s smooth, she is slipping in and out undetected.” 

Qualley also addressed how, according to her, women seem to have a natural detective ability. She explained, “No girl needs to be taught how to be a detective. Women know what's happening even when they don't know what's happening. I remember in my early twenties, especially, my investigative skills on Instagram were really out of control. It's a combination of tools, craft, and gut instinct.”
