What is the plot of Holland film?

Set in the seemingly idyllic town of Holland, Michigan, Holland follows Nancy Vandergroot, a meticulous teacher and homemaker whose picture-perfect life with her husband and son unravels after she begins to suspect a hidden truth. When she and a friendly colleague start digging, they uncover unsettling secrets that shatter their carefully crafted world.

Her suspicions grow when her husband unexpectedly announces an out-of-town trip, leading her down a dangerous path of discovery. As she wrestles with the consequences of her actions, the town’s seemingly wholesome traditions—like Dutch tap dancing being the only acceptable form of dance—add to the eerie undertone of her unraveling reality.

Director Mimi Cave told People, “There's an odd sort of offbeat humor about it that we're hoping people get and enjoy,” hinting at the film’s unique tone, blending suspense with dark humor.

Who’s in the cast of Holland?

Director Mimi Cave saw Nicole Kidman as the perfect choice for Holland’s leading role, drawing inspiration from her performance in To Die For (1995). In an interview with People, Cave explained, “She plays this incredibly undertone comedic lead, and I knew she had that in her, but maybe just hasn’t, you know, been in a role [like that] in a while. She is so funny, so deeply funny.”

Cave also highlighted Kidman’s dedication on set, saying, “She’s really incredible to watch, and she’s someone I’ve learned a great deal from. It was a pretty magnificent experience for me.” She added that Kidman makes herself “completely available to you as a director,” making their collaboration especially rewarding.

Is There a Trailer for Holland?

The first trailer for Holland offers a chilling glimpse into Nancy’s seemingly perfect life in the idyllic town of Holland, Michigan. “Every day I get to wake up in the best place on Earth: Holland, Michigan,” Kidman’s Nancy says as picturesque scenes of Windmill Island Gardens, tulip fields, and Dutch dancing unfold.

However, the facade of suburban bliss quickly starts to crack. “It may seem like we have everything all together, but right under the surface, it’s like we’re being strangled,” she continues, hinting at the film’s darker undercurrents.

The unease deepens when her husband Fred casually announces he’ll be staying overnight in another town for work. Suspicion creeps in, setting Nancy on a path that uncovers disturbing secrets hidden beneath the town’s polished exterior.

The trailer also teases moments of eerie domestic normalcy laced with tension. Over dinner, Macfadyen’s character compliments the meal with an oddly specific observation: “This is really super tonight, Nance. Did you do something different?” To which Nancy dryly responds, “Uh, brown mustard instead of yellow. I felt like doing something a little cr*zy.” The subtle yet unsettling exchange underscores the film’s blend of psychological tension and dark humor.

With its gripping mystery, haunting visuals, and a mounting sense of dread, Holland promises an unsettling thriller where nothing is as it seems.

Holland (2025) Movie Reviews & Critical Responses

On Rotten Tomatoes, at the time of writing, Holland holds a 36% approval rating from 28 critics, with an average score of 5.3/10. Metacritic assigned the film a weighted score of 45 out of 100, based on 12 reviews, indicating "mixed or average" reactions.

Peter Debruge of Variety noted that the film immerses viewers in its protagonist’s perspective, which, while not entirely believable, offers an engaging experience for those who enjoy questioning whether the character is unstable or the sole voice of reason.

Chase Hutchinson of The Wrap praised Nicole Kidman, saying, “She can be witheringly funny, devastatingly intense and is, most critically, always willing to throw herself into parts that can become tricky balancing acts between the two," often “taken for granted” for her immense talent.

Glenn Garner of Deadline also commended the cast, describing Kidman’s performance as "witty" and "manic," likening it to “To Die For” with its biting humor and gripping mystery.

William Hosie of the London Evening Standard echoed this sentiment, stating that Kidman’s role is "a further testament to Kidman’s versatility as an actress" and reaffirms her ability to bring uniquely compelling characters to life.

Lovia Gyarkye of The Hollywood Reporter highlighted director Mimi Cave’s distinctive style, praising her ability to create an "a disturbing portrait of suburban unease."

Adrian Horton of The Guardian similarly lauded the film’s eerie atmosphere and striking visuals but felt that the narrative lacked depth, describing it as "a discernible gap between the quality of the visuals, the chilling atmosphere of destabilizing suspicion that Cave conjures, and the actual material, which is as flimsy as one of Nancy’s Dutch hats."

Filming Details

Filming for Holland took place from early March to May 7, 2023, with locations spanning Holland, Michigan, and Tennessee. A small portion of the film was shot two years prior in Holland, including scenes at Windmill Island Gardens, home to the historic DeZwaan Windmill (Holland Sentinel). However, the majority of production occurred in Clarksville, Tennessee (via Wood TV 8).

Behind the Scenes

Holland is a 2025 American mystery thriller directed by Mimi Cave and written by Andrew Sodroski. The film is produced by Kate Churchill, Peter Dealbert, Nicole Kidman, and Per Saari, with Bart Lipton and Sodroski serving as executive producers.

Other key crew members include cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski, editor Martin Pensa, production designer JC Molina, sound designers Jeff Pitts and Martyn Zub, and composer Alex Somers.

Originally titled Holland, Michigan, the project underwent changes before its release, including a shift in timeline. While Sodroski’s script was originally set in the present day when it topped the 2013 Black List, Cave moved the story to the year 2000 to enhance its themes.

Having grown up in the Midwest and left around 2002, Cave felt a personal connection to the era, which influenced her creative choices. She first came across the script while editing Fresh and told Variety, "I knew a little bit about the history of it and how it had tried to have a couple of different lives. And, for some reason, I couldn't stop thinking about it."

Kidman not only stars in Holland but also champions female directors through her work. Since vowing in 2017 to collaborate with a female director every 18 months, she has worked with 19 women behind the camera. In a Time interview, she highlighted the challenges female directors face, stating they are pressured to "be perfect on the first release" and that the industry bias "can only be changed by actually being in the films of women."
