Plot
Jung Jinsu, the founder of the New Truth religious cult, returns after being condemned to hell for several years, only to discover that both the New Truth and its extremist faction, the Arrowhead, now dominate society. As he navigates this new reality, he questions the implications of his resurrection and the doctrines preached by his cult. Netflix released a new trailer on Oct. 11, giving more insight into the show. The clip opens with the quiet return of cult leader Jung Jin-su after his resurrection. As tensions rise around Park Jung-ja, another resurrected individual, Jung steps in to reclaim his leadership.
The trailer emphasizes the growing chaos as both Jung Jin-su and Park Jung-ja, known as the Resurrected Ones, play pivotal roles. On Sept. 25, Netflix unveiled the teaser for Hellbound season two, featuring stars Kim Sung Cheol, Kim Hyun Joo, Kim Shin Rok, and more. The teaser reveals a world in chaos as those condemned to hell mysteriously resurrect, causing widespread disorder and innocent lives lost. Is Hellbound Based on a book?
Hellbound is adapted from the webtoon of the same name, created by the series' director Yeon Sang-ho and writer-illustrator Choi Gyu-seok. Speaking to Variety in 2021, Yeon explained, "When Choi and I developed this story, we aimed to create a world akin to hell, shaped by people unable to cope with uncertainty. We wanted to depict a society where conflicting beliefs clash."
Why did Yoo Ah-in get Replaced in Hellbound Season 2?
In season one, Yoo Ah-in portrayed Jung Jin-su, the founding leader of the New Truth Society. However, after a hair sample tested positive for propofol use, the National Forensic Service reported the results to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s drug investigation unit. Due to the ongoing investigation into his alleged illegal drug use, the show's creators decided to replace him, casting Kim Sung-Cheol in his role.
Filming
Filming took place in Seoul, South Korea, and production for the second season officially began in early Aug. 2023, as confirmed by Netflix's K-Content account.

Hellbound is written and directed by Yeon Sang-ho, and produced by Kim Yeon-ho under Climax Studio. The series features cinematography by Byun Bong-sun and a score composed by Kim Dong-wook. "I'm both excited and nervous for fans to experience the series after three years," said Yeon Sang-ho. "Season two will offer intriguing questions for those who enjoyed the first season," he added.
