HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter series continues to shape its star-studded cast, and the latest addition is a crucial one. The network is reportedly close to finalizing a deal for an actor to take on the iconic role of the beloved half-giant and Hogwarts groundskeeper–Hagrid, a character originally played by Robbie Coltrane in the film franchise.
According to Deadline, British actor-comedian Nick Frost is in negotiations to portray Rubeus Hagrid in the upcoming series. Best known for his work in Edgar Wright’s Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy—Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End—Frost has also appeared in Into the Badlands and will appear in the How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake.
While HBO has not officially confirmed his casting, Frost’s recent cryptic Instagram post—"It’s happening, it’s actually happening"—has fueled speculation. Fans also noticed that he recently followed other cast members of the series, including John Lithgow and Paapa Essiedu.
In response to the speculation, HBO released a statement saying, “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.” (via Deadline)
If the deal is finalized, Frost will join John Lithgow, who is set to play Albus Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer and Paapa Essiedu are rumored to be in negotiations to portray Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape, respectively. Meanwhile, the search continues for Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, with Warner Bros. launching an open casting call in late 2024 for children aged 9 to 11.
The Harry Potter series is being developed by writer/showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director/executive producer Mark Mylod. HBO has described it as a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s seven-book saga, with each season covering one book. Rowling is also involved as an executive producer.
The project is expected to span nearly a decade, with filming expected to take place at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, where the original movies were shot. The series is expected to debut in late 2026 or early 2027 on HBO & Max.
With major roles beginning to take shape, fans eagerly await official announcements—and the first glimpse of HBO’s vision for the Wizarding World.
