HBO Max will soon begin streaming live sports thanks to a new deal between the US Soccer Federation and Turner Sports, a division of WarnerMedia. The 8-year agreement will allow HBO Max to stream several matches of the US national team.
TNT and TBS, linear channels owned by WarnerMedia, are also a part of this deal to stream at least 20 matches each year. Starting from 2023, TBS and TNT will air roughly half of these matches. The rest will stream exclusively on HBO Max.
As part of the agreement, Turner Sports, along with its division Bleacher Report, will have exclusive rights to live coverage of the matches. Additionally, Turner Sports will be the exclusive English-language destination for various events for the women's and men's national soccer teams in the US. These include the SheBelieves Cup, National Team friendlies, special events related to the Olympic Games, and of course, the US National Team World Cup qualifiers, among others.
The deal also comprises "additional content and storytelling opportunities throughout the WarnerMedia portfolio, eCommerce rights, the possibility of integrating sports betting experiences, among others," according to a press release.
Last year, WarnerMedia signed a 7-year pact with the National Hockey League and brought live hockey coverage on HBO Max. The company is building upon its diverse portfolio to include more sports content in addition to its already impressive collection of TV and film content. This move also solidifies their position in the field of streaming platforms providing live sports content, like Paramount+, which offers NFL games, UEFA Champions League soccer matches, and more.
