A brand new season of our favorite medical drama is on its way, and we are really excited to stream it online. We saw that the season 20 finale put several jobs at risk. Catherine discovered that Meredith had continued Alzheimer's research despite her forbidding it, and now, anyone associated with Meredith's research, even indirectly, may need to find new jobs. Will we get to see Ellen Pompeo at all this season?

Well, the good news is that we have all you need to know about the new installment, including the premiere date, where you can stream it, plot, episode count, returning and departing cast members, and more. We will also update this article with newer information, such as an official trailer, as soon as it is announced. Meanwhile, here's everything we know about Grey's Anatomy Season 21 so far.

Release Date & Where to Watch

Grey's Anatomy Season 21 will premiere on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. This time slot will make it the last show of the night, starting after season eight of 9-1-1 and the premiere of Doctor Odyssey. You will be able to stream the episodes on Hulu the next day.

Plot

The biggest question going into season 21 of Grey’s Anatomy is: Who is still working at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital? In the finale of the last season, we saw that Teddy and Amelia were both fired after Catherine came to know about their part in Meredith’s research into Alzheimer’s. The new season will also focus on how the medical community responds to Meredith and Amelia's contentious ideas about Alzheimer's precursors and whether they can secure new funding to go on with their research.

Season 21 will also address the future of the intern program after the entire class, and Bailey threatened to quit. They aimed to convince Catherine to prevent Lucas from repeating his intern year.

Cast

Season 21 Update

Camilla Luddington, who plays Dr. Jo Wilson, recently teased a shocking twist for the new season. In her podcast called Call It What It Is, she told fellow podcast host Jessica Capshaw, who played Arizona Robbins in the show, that the script of the first episode has left her shocked.

She said, "I woke up this morning, scrolled through my phone and there it was, sitting in my inbox, the premier episode script of Grey's Anatomy season 21. And you know what's so funny and you know this Jess, we never know what's going to happen," adding, "We are not given a heads-up, so I was reading the script in bed this morning and I was shooketh. I was shooketh, I was amazed and yeah, we're going back next week, I actually have a table read tomorrow."

Confirmed Exits

Grey's Anatomy season 21 is implementing cost-cutting measures, which means we will see many cast members appearing in fewer episodes. Jake Borelli and Midori Francis will return for only a couple of episodes before exiting the show as series regulars. Borelli plays Dr. Levi Schmit, and has been on the show since season 14, while Francis plays Dr. Mika Yasuda, who appeared in season 19.

Will Ellen Pompeo come back for Season 21?

Yes. According to reports, she is set to return for at least seven episodes, with potential for more. She will also continue to serve as an executive producer. In the middle of the 19th season of the show, Pompeo officially exited as a series regular but has since appeared in many episodes. In an interview, showrunner Meg Marinis said, "She’s always a huge part of the show; we have an open-door policy with her. When she is able to be here, we welcome her with open arms."

How many Episodes will be in Grey's Anatomy Season 21?

According to reports, this season will have at least 18 episodes. This is a significantly higher number than the previous 10-episode installment (episodes were reduced due to the Hollywood strikes).
