Google Earth is receiving a neat new feature that allows users to check the geographical distance between any two locations. The feature is currently exclusive to Android devices and Chrome’s desktop version with no mention of when iOS devices will be receiving the new feature.
Many Maps applications already had access to distance measurement features, but Google Earth promises to offer highly accurate results using the Measure feature. Users can plot unlimited plot points on the map and measure the distance between any two points. Area and perimeter measurements are also available with the new update. It is a great way to measure how big or small public facilities or even entire countries are right from the Google Earth app.
The new Measure feature takes advantage of AR technology to measure distances and areas. Apple recently introduced their Measure app for iOS 12 at WWDC 2018. Unlike Apple’s offering which can measure almost everything using the iOS Camera app, Google Earth is restricted to measuring geographical locations only.
Google also introduced its standalone Measure AR app for Android devices that can measure any daily object or even the size of indoor spaces. It is a handy tool that can be used when you do not have a measuring tape or scale to take measurements. Google is yet to release the AR apps for iOS devices because iOS 12 is still a few months away from launch and it will include the new AR Kit 2 to implement full AR support for the platform which is not available yet.
We feel the new Measure feature is a great addition for Google Earth. Did you try out the new update yet? Let us know in the comments below. Get instant updates on TechNadu’s Facebook page, or Twitter handle.
