Plot

Get Millie Black follows Millie-Jean Black, a former Scotland Yard detective who returns to her homeland of Jamaica to investigate missing persons cases. With a troubled past in London, she dives into a series of investigations that uncover dangerous criminal networks in Kingston. 

As she works through cases involving lost family members, including a sibling who may be beyond saving, Millie uncovers shocking truths that threaten to destroy her world.

The series, created by Marlon James, brings a unique, authentic perspective on Jamaica, blending noir detective storytelling with themes of race, class, trauma, and identity.

Filming

Filming for Get Millie Black began in May 2022, with production starting in Jamaica for roughly three months before moving to London.

The HBO limited series Get Millie Black is created by Booker Prize-winning author Marlon James and produced by Motive Pictures. Executive producers include Jami O’Brien, Simon Maxwell, and Tanya Hamilton, with Hamilton also serving as the lead director alongside Annetta Laufer and Jean Luc Herbulot. Writers such as Lydia Adetunji, Theresa Ikoko, and Pia Furtado contributed to the scripts. 

Produced for both HBO and Channel 4, Get Millie Black is part of the growing trend of female-led detective series, following in the footsteps of True Detective: Night Country and Mare of Easttown.
