Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will be available for streaming on Max starting Friday, Aug. 16, 2024, 84 days after its US theatrical release. Rated R for its intense action sequences and grisly imagery, Furiosa is an action-packed addition to the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max.Â
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga centers on the origin story of Furiosa, now portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy, a character originally brought to life by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road. The film is set 45 years before the societal collapse depicted in the franchise and aims to explore how Furiosa became a formidable force within this dystopian world.
The story begins with young Furiosa being abducted from the Green Place of Many Mothers by a ruthless biker horde led by the Warlord Dementus. As they journey through the Wasteland, they encounter the Citadel, ruled by the tyrannical Immortan Joe. As these two warlords clash for control, Furiosa must navigate a series of trials to survive and find her way back home.
This prequel not only delves into Furiosa’s backstory but also sheds light on the chaotic events leading up to Mad Max: Fury Road, offering a deeper understanding of the character’s fierce determination and the world she inhabits.
The first trailer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga roared online in December 2023, quickly catching us up on the crucial elements of Miller's new narrative. Using a Star Wars-style narrative crawl, the teaser revealed that a young Furiosa was abducted from her home as a child and has spent her life trying to reunite with her family. However, the journey is anything but easy, as she faces off against warlords, biker gangs, and some familiar masked faces along the way.
Warner Bros released the second trailer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga online on March 19, 2024.
As for the future of the franchise, while promoting the release of Furiosa in 2024, Miller revealed that another prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road has already been written. This new prequel delves into the backstory of both Furiosa and Max, providing more depth to the events leading up to Fury Road. Miller explained, "To tell the story of Fury Road, which happens over a very compressed amount of time, we had to write the story of Furiosa and the 18 years before we meet her in Fury Road. We also wrote the story of the year before we encountered Max in Fury Road. So, we have that story. We wrote that as a novella, Nico Lathouris and I, and so that's the story we have yet to tell."
This suggests that more Mad Max films are on the horizon, with Miller and his team continuing to expand the rich universe they’ve created.
Furiosa is a prequel that ties into the earlier films in unexpected ways. Here's the chronological order of the series, along with our recommended viewing sequence:
