Sony has been hesitant to open up to other platforms when it comes to offering crossplay. Recently, Switch owners who play Fortnite on PS4 as well were locked out of cross-play. Sony defended its decision to block cross-play aggressively, but the company has finally taken a U-turn against its initial decision.
A surprise blog was released earlier today by Sony retracting the company’s decision to block cross-play. Fortnite is the biggest game on the market right now, and millions of players are rejoicing at the Japanese gaming giant’s decision to finally allow players the freedom to play with their friends who may own other gaming systems.
President of Sony Interactive Entertainment John Kodera revealed “Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform.”
The new cross-platform program covers all major systems including Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows and Mac platforms and of course Sony’s own PlayStation 4. Going forward, the PlayStation 5 which is rumored to be announced within the next two years is also likely to continue supporting cross-play with other platforms. The popularity of Fortnite made Sony cave into the players’ demands, and millions across the world will finally be able to play on multiple systems without their accounts being restricted.
There is no confirmed time frame as to when cross-play will be available. There will be a beta program to test cross play starting today for Fortnite only. It remains to be seen how other games are handled by publishers and Sony when it comes to offering cross-play.
