As reported by The Verge, Flipboard is making changes that will include a broader selection of articles and also recommendations of tech-related products for the people who follow these topics. Products recommendations will vary depending on your interests which will be collected by an algorithm. Other than that, users will be able to see stories put together into packages by Flipboard's publishing partners like TechCrunch, Wirecutter, The Verge, and others.
Another new thing the company is trying to bring to the table is private forums where colleagues and friends can share articles and discuss them in private.
The company is trying to match its competitors, but will it do any good?
When it was created, this website was meant to be used as a beautifully incorporated RSS feed which drew millions of users towards it. Today we have Facebook, Google News, Apple News and similar services which are doing a very similar thing and their users have gotten used to sharing stories on these platforms. This is the main reason Flipboard is getting into e-commerce beside enterprise software.
And while we are mentioning relevance, these new features do help the company spread its name around since people were supposed to share all these stories via Flipboard's app. However, this begs another question. Is it easier to ask your friends to install the Flipboard app on their phone so that you can share a story, or is it just easier to share them a link to the story through the Facebook messenger, Viber, Whats-Up or any other messaging service? Yes, even an email is a faster way to do that.
Will Flipboard succeed in their plans, the time will tell.
