Flickr was one of the most popular photo-sharing platforms, but it failed to keep up in the social sphere with much cheaper photo management solutions cropping up. The company was picked up by SmugMug last year, and it was announced that free accounts would not get access to more than 1,000 uploads. If you opt for the Pro package, you will get access to unlimited uploads for $50 a year. If you have more than 1,000 photos on the platform, your oldest photos will be deleted starting tomorrow.
The changes were announced in November last year, and users were given three months to back up their photos. There is no way to download all of your photos at one go, but you can sort all of your images into groups of up to 5,000 images and download them in bulk. If you own any photos under the Creative Commons License, you will not have to worry about them getting deleted even if you have over 1,000 photos on Flickr. However, you cannot update your images with the licenses as the deadline for it has already expired in November.
Flickr was a popular platform in the early 2000s, and it slowly faded away with platforms like Facebook and Twitter breaking into the social media scene. The new age platforms offer virtually unlimited storage for photos, and it leaves platforms like Flickr viable only for photography and professional use mostly. While Flickr did announce that they will be deleting your photos, it is unknown if the platform will keep a backup of all user photos for use in the future. Flickr stated that these changes to the platform will allow them to offer better quality services to all users and more changes are expected over the course of this year.
