Watching videos together in sync is something amiss in most social media platforms. Internet users have to opt for services like Rabbit and Watch2gether to view video content with their friends. Even though live streams are available on social media platforms, they may or may not be in sync depending on connectivity, and the lack of private chat makes the experience feel less personal. Facebook may soon introduce a “Watch Videos Together” on Messenger in an upcoming update.
The feature is still in its internal testing phases, and Facebook has responded to reports stating that the company tests feature all the time, and it may or may not be released anytime soon. Facebook seeks to create shared experiences, and the new feature could allow users to view any video content of their choosing in private instead of having to rely on live streams. It is unknown what streaming platforms will be supported by the app if the feature releases soon.
Facebook had already attempted to bring friends together on the platform through its Watch Party feature but having a more personal experience instead of messaging in a group or events page is much more appealing. The upcoming feature was spotted by Ananay Arora, who works as a mobile investigator and owns deadline management app Timebound.
Facebook has confirmed that they are working on the feature but did not reveal much else. According to the code found in the internal testing build, users may be able to bring over their Instagram friends to Messenger for viewing videos and live events together.
The upcoming feature can also serve as a potential source of revenue for Facebook with promoted content. With the social media giant seeing a slowdown in News Feed growth and being more reliant on Messenger and Instagram for ad revenue, the new feature may help turn things in the website’s favor.
