Facebook announced its “Causes” feature in 2015 to help users raise funds for charities or personal causes. Since its release, over 20 million people have contributed via the platform to help others. The social media platform released an official statement to announce that it exceeded $1 billion in contributions and the fundraising tools will be extended to new locations like Canada and Australia.
Facebook will also be participating in Giving Tuesday by matching all donations up to a total of $7 million for any US-based fundraiser on the platform on the event day. Save The Children is one of the top organizations. The organization managed to raise over $7.5 million in the past two years, which has helped over 6.5 million children in over 60 countries. Other organizations like Marine Mammal Center, Stop Soldier Suicide and St. Jude has helped make the world a better place thanks to charitable contributions from donors.
Facebook revealed in its official statement “we want to celebrate and express our gratitude to the community of people and organizations who have used our tools to support the causes they care about, making a meaningful and lasting impact in their communities.”
Facebook users from Canada and Australia will have access to more than 100,000 charities using the PayPal Giving Fund. 'Causes' is now available in 20 countries, and all transactions are free from any kind of transaction fees.
Facebook has been struggling as a platform with the site’s teen demographic dropping constantly. The platform’s countless security issues that started with the Cambridge Analytica scandal and more recently, theft of user tokens have not helped the platform’s image. However, the website’s numerous partnerships with charitable organizations and Causes has helped countless individuals all over the world, and the social media’s impact is undeniable.
