After 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, we have 28 Years Later, the third film that rounds out this apocalyptic horror trilogy. Excitement has been building for this film for a long time and finally, after months of agonizing wait, the production team has finally released the poster of the film.
The poster hints at the sheer mayhem and bloodshed that’s sure to happen due to the infected again which has been a staple for the franchise. This is implied through the red biological hazard sign that’s covered with skulls. In this article, we will discuss the latest updates regarding 28 Years Later, release details, and more
We will keep updating this article with more news as and when it comes, so stay tuned for more information.
28 Years Later will be released in theaters on Friday, June 20, 2025. It is distributed by Sony Pictures worldwide.
The plot of 28 Years Later hasn’t been made public yet, but the recently released poster has given some hints regarding what it could be. The biological hazard symbol filled with several small skulls could hint at how severe the infected problem has become as if it wasn’t bad before.
After all, we know that the second film, 28 Weeks Later, ends with hordes of infected making their way to Paris. This means that the virus has spread to Europe. So, the disease isn’t contained to Britain anymore and will probably become a global pandemic.
With the chance of making a cure dwindling, the situation must have gotten worse. It’s also clear from the tagline which says, “Time Didn’t Heal Anything,” meaning the same problems that persisted in the last film are still there.
The trailer of 28 Years Later has been released and it shows that it has been 10, 228 days since the epidemic began. Since then, days have become weeks and weeks have become years. The people still alive have arranged themselves into a primitive community with traditional roles like farming, seamstress, etc. However, peace is only an illusion as we see the military taking on the infected.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Jamie is also seen running to or from somewhere. Along with him, we get a glimpse of what looks like a rotted and mummified version of Cillian Murphy's Jim. The infected issue is far from over. Check out the trailer below:
The monsters seen in 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later are called the Infected and they become rage-fueled, aggressive monsters once they come in contact with the Rage Virus. The lab-made virus turns people into the Infected within 10 to 20 seconds of exposure.
The Infected are very physically capable and can move really fast. But they are unable to control their impulses and often attack the uninfected. However, they do die of starvation because they can’t address the need to have food.
At the end of 28 Weeks Later, the group of survivors who had sought refuge in District One, a fortified city, found that the virus had infiltrated the safe zone, which led to a devastating outbreak. As the infected flooded the place, Don sacrificed his wife to ensure his survival.
In an attempt to control the outbreak, the military firebombed the area, killing everyone. Seemingly, only two kids, Andy and Tammy, who have a natural immunity to the virus, escaped and got out into the outside world. But unlike the first film, the second one in the trilogy doesn’t end with hope.
Instead, the movie ends with Tammy and Andy standing in an empty desolate field. It seems like they are the only survivors.
At the end of 28 Days Later, Cillian Murphy's Jim gets shot by Major West. However, he doesn’t die. Instead, a time jump shows that Jim survived and settled down with Selena and Hannah. They try to signal a plane flying overhead so that they can escape from infected England.
So, since Jim is alive by the end of the film, this means that we will be seeing him again after almost three decades in the next one. The popular theories say that since there still isn’t a cure and the situation with the Infected has gotten worse, so Jim might still be at the old house with Selena and Hannah.
Filming began on May 7, 2024, in Northumberland and wrapped on July 29. The film was shot using an iPhone 15 Pro Max with multiple other specialized attachments.
28 Years Later is directed, written, and produced by Danny Boyle. Joining him in writing and producing responsibilities is Alex Garland. Apart from them, Andrew Macdonald, Bernie Bellew, and Peter Rice have also produced the project. Anthony Dod Mantle serves as the cinematographer. The production companies involved are Columbia Pictures, Decibel Films, DNA Films, and the British Film Institute. Sony Pictures is distributing the movie.
