In the latest Inside Look, the cast and crew delve into the upcoming season's themes and character developments. For a visual glimpse into the upcoming season, you can watch an inside look below.
"This season, Sophie has become significantly more self-reliant and driven; she is pursuing a mission,” Mbatha-Raw said in an interview with The Philadelphia Tribune. “At the end of the first episode, Sophie declares that she has nothing left to lose, leading her to become more ruthless and focused on her goal,” she added.
“Even though she still experiences memory lapses and has to fake her way through social situations, she’s determined. She dresses up, attends the parties, and attempts to infiltrate the wealthy and powerful Huntley family to uncover the secrets of her own past. With an expanded cast and the backdrop of London, this season is a thrilling ride,” she further added.
“In season one, James tries to be noble by protecting Sophie. He lies to protect her and gets caught up in a web of lies. She leaves him and seizes all his money, fulfilling his deepest fear. In season two, James has nothing left to lose and wants revenge for what happened,” Jackson-Cohen stated.
Millie Brady returns as Eliza in this season, joining the effort to conceal the truth from Sophia. Reflecting on the captivating storyline of the second season, Brady shared, “The wealthy believe they can manipulate situations with their money and power, but their plans often backfire. They operate under the assumption that they can control everything, which may seem plausible initially but ultimately fails."
“This theme is evident in high society, where the Huntleys have evaded consequences for their actions for years due to their wealth and status,” Brady added. “They follow a different set of rules than everyone else. Eliza disrupts this pattern by challenging the status quo and questioning the morality of their actions.”
Pinto reflected on the experience, saying, “The experience was enjoyable because often, it feels like the characters are far ahead of the audience.” He added, “In this case, Quinn wasn’t ahead of his own story. He would reach a point and believe it was the end, only to discover another challenge waiting. It was a wonderful way for the story to reveal itself to him and the audience throughout the series.”
Gavin Drea described Surface season two as "a gift to the audience," emphasizing the slow reveal of the story and the unfolding psychological thriller. "I particularly like watching a psychological thriller that unfolds slowly," he said.
Regarding his character, Callum, Drea shared his initial hopes that Grace would have her own secrets to reveal, adding, "When I first signed on, I was hoping that since she knew the Huntley family’s secrets and lies, she would also have some of her own to offer." The script's twist, where Grace grapples with whether to remain part of the Huntley family, was a thrilling surprise.
"Callum is constantly overwhelmed and struggling to stay afloat," Drea explained. He is thrust into a world of wealthy elites, working tirelessly to protect their secrets. "Fighting an establishment with endless resources that could ruin him is an exhausting task," he admitted, noting Callum’s moral compass, as he struggles to do what’s right in the face of mounting challenges.
Season one of Surface follows Sophie, a woman who survives a suicide attempt but loses all memory of her life. As she pieces together her past with the help of her husband, James, and others around her, Sophie begins to doubt whether the information she’s being given is accurate.
By the season finale, Sophie uncovers the truth: her suicide attempt was actually an effort to escape her current life in San Francisco and return to her previous identity as Tess in London. As she returns to London, she seeks answers about Eliza, a mysterious figure from her past. Meanwhile, her husband James struggles to let go, adding complexity to the web of relationships and unanswered questions that set the stage for season two.
Surface season two began production in London after the series was renewed on Dec. 2, 2022. The decision to relocate from San Francisco to London was a deliberate one, according to producers Veronica West and Lauren Neustadter.
"San Francisco was the perfect backdrop for season one mystery," Neustadter explains, "however, London fits for where we are going in season two. There is the feeling of danger, but also being able to dive into this realm of tremendous wealth makes it a great fit." (via The Philadelphia Tribune)
Surface, created by Veronica West and produced by Apple Studios, is an intense and captivating thriller starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who also executive produces. The series has garnered praise for its twisty plot and engaging drama.
For season two, Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter return as executive producers on behalf of Hello Sunshine. Directors for the new season include Ed Lilly, Jon East, Lynsey Miller, and Alrick Riley, bringing fresh energy to the series.
