Over the fifteen years that Naruto aired, the series made us cry several times. So much so that even more than two decades later, Naruto remains one of the most emotional shows ever. Now that the next generation is in play, many things about the show have changed except the emotional aspect of the original series.
By the end of the War arc in Naruto: Shippuden, Sasuke Uchiha (like Naruto) was visited by the Sage of Six Paths, AKA Rikudou Sennin. Our two heroes received god-like powers, strong enough to rival the mother of all chakra, Kaguya Otsutsuki. While Naruto received Six Paths Yang Power and the ability to use Six Paths Sage Mode, Sasuke received the strongest doujutsu that an Uchiha, nay anyone, could awaken: The Rinnegan.
However, Sasuke Uchiha lost his most prized possession in a separate battle in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. As most Naruto fans do not watch the sequel show, the question has plagued the fandom for a while now: Did Sasuke lose his Rinnegan? Here's what we know.
Firstly, here's your confirmation if you still think that the news is a rumor: Yes, Sasuke does indeed lose his Rinnegan in Boruto. The incident was truly tragic for many reasons. The first reason was that the Rinnegan was bestowed to Sasuke from the Sage of Six Paths himself. Awakening the Rinnegan by himself would take Sasuke ages, which means even if it was a possibility, it's unlikely that it would happen.
Naruto buffs will remember that, as strong as he was, even Uchiha Madara could only awaken the Rinnegan when he was old and dying. Secondly, Sasuke's Rinnegan was what made him the strongest (second only to Naruto) shinobi in the world. His doujutsu was unrivaled for all these years and had practically given him a god-like status in the shinobi world! Now that the ability is lost, so is that status.
Moreover, Sasuke's eye was stabbed, meaning he didn't just lose the Rinnegan but also his left Mangekyou Sharingan. Fans will remember that Sasuke's Mangekyou Sharingan was also extremely powerful. Thanks to Itachi, Sasuke's left Mangekyou could produce Amaterasu while his right eye had flame control. It seems that the abilities that his beloved older brother passed on to him are now gone as well.
Not only this, but the incident with Sasuke's Rinnegan occurs right after another tragedy that happens with our very own Naruto Uzumaki. In order to defeat Isshiki Otsutsuki, Naruto uses something called Baryon Mode, which leads to the former's inevitable defeat. However, it seems that the cost of the mode was Kurama's life. That's right, Naruto's nine-tailed companion, who was introduced in the very first episode of the original series, is dead.
If this tragedy wasn't enough to bring fans to tears, just as everyone is about to celebrate Isshiki's defeat, Momoshiki possesses Boruto's body and stabs Sasuke's Rinnegan. Momoshiki wanted to prevent Sasuke and the gang from leaving the place by using Teleportation, which is what Sasuke primarily used his Rinnegan for.
It truly is one of the most heartbreaking moments of the series since the bond between Boruto and Sasuke is so strong. The young titular ninja feels extremely guilty about what happened, especially since it was done through him. What's sadder is that instead of grieving for his loss, Sasuke explains to Boruto that he was prepared to die in the battle with Isshiki and that only losing his left eye is more than he could have expected.
Of course, we know that no matter what Sasuke says, he does indeed value the power of his eyes. This was confirmed when Sasuke implanted his older brother Itachi's eyes, creating the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan, even though he didn't want to at first. He only did it to prevent himself from going blind, thereby proving that he cared about the Sharingan's power. While Sasuke has lost the ability to produce Amaterasu, it remains to be seen if he can still use his Susanoo.
