The anime world has been seeing mergers and new launches quite frequently recently. As the genre becomes popular, more and more streaming services have been dabbling in the distribution of anime content. It seems that Disney is the latest one to join the list, as the conglomerate recently revealed a strategic collaboration agreement with Nippon TV that covers content sharing and local language co-production.
Speaking of the collaboration, the two companies in a joint statement said, "The collaboration will include co-production of local language content ranging from drama series, animation to variety shows on Disney Plus for both Japanese and global audiences and the availability of both companies' content on their respective platforms."
According to the latest update, the latest edition of Nippon TV's drama series, The Files of Young Kindaichi, will start broadcasting next month. In addition, the show will be made available on Disney's online platform, Disney Plus, for fans not only in Japan but worldwide! The two companies have worked together in the past. However, this show will be the first time Nippon TV content will become available for viewers globally on Disney's streaming service.
Throughout its 70-year run, Nippon TV has dabbled in various businesses, from broadcast tv to fitness clubs. The network is also the owner of the streaming service Hulu Japan.
Disney's managing director Carol Choi said in a statement that "as Disney moves into the world of local content production, we are excited to expand our collaboration with Nippon TV Holdings as one of our strategic partners, starting with a very popular title to audiences across Asia Pacific." The President of Nippon Television Holdings, Yoshikuni Sugiyama, spoke about the partnership and said, "it is an incredible honor to be able to develop our relationship further and join forces [with Disney] to advance our global expansion."
Upon moving out of the United States, Disney+ has added non-Disney-related properties to its streaming service! Disney+ in Japan streams Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, JUJUTSU KAISEN, and more anime series. The platform is slated to stream the Black ★★ Rock Shooter DAWN FALL and Summer Time Rendering TV anime series in April 2022 worldwide.
