Demon Slayer movie's US release got marked R-rated, even after it practically slew all the other films on the Japanese box office. An "R" rating basically means that the movie is "restricted" for a certain type of audience, In case you don't know. So people that are sensitive or not old enough can avoid watching it. So R-rated mark maybe like a trigger warning of some sort.
Well, it’s not much of a surprise to us, though. We mean, have you seen the amount of violence and gore that’s in the film? There’s blood and killing everywhere in the series. Not to mention suicide and torture.
Which… makes it a little inappropriate for children. Hence, the US Motion Picture Association had decided to rate the movie as restricted and released it as an R-rated film. That means anyone below the age of 17 will be required to have parental guidance to watch the movie.
It basically means: get your momma to buy you a ticket. If she allows you to watch it, then you can. Otherwise, you need to wait till you’re 18, buddy.
The Japanese National Film Critiques, Eirin (The Film Classification and Rating Organization), rated the movie PG-12 (US equivalent of PG-13) so that anyone above the age of 12 can watch the film without parental consent. It has always been a difficult task to please the US audience. Of course, that’s not the case in Japan. The fact that the film made it this big in the US is an achievement in itself.
Let’s not forget that Australia restricted the movie to anyone below 15 years. And anyone below 16 years of age in Singapore is pretty much banned from watching it at all.
It is pretty interesting to us to see that the age restriction varies in different places. We find out about a country’s local audience and cultural myridity. It reveals how much horror and gore the audience in a particular country can handle. Japanese audience seems to have a slightly higher threshold for violence and gore.
