At the 2025 Golden Globe Awards, Demi Moore has finally got her long-awaited flowers. For the first time in her acting career which has spanned close to 5 decades, the actress has won a Golden Globe for the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy category for The Substance.

She was nominated in 1997 for If These Walls Could Talk and again in 1991 for her performance in Ghost but didn’t win a Golden Globe for them. In this article, we will highlight, Moore’s speech that highlighted how a producer shattered her confidence and how The Substance changed it all.

Demi Moore Revealed how one Producer Shattered her Confidence

In her speech after winning the Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy category for The Substance, Demi Moore said, “I really wasn't expecting that. I'm just in shock right now. I've been doing this a long time, like over 45 years, and this is the first time I've ever won anything as an actor. I'm just so humbled and so grateful.”

She also revealed that about 30 years ago a producer had basically told her that would not be able to win anything because she was a “popcorn actress”. Moore recounted the incident and said, “Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me I was a 'popcorn actress.' At that time, I made that mean that this (awards) wasn't something I was allowed to have. That I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money, but that I couldn't be acknowledged.”

The actress said that she bought into that mindset and that proved harmful to her. “I bought in and I believed that and that corroded me over time to the point where a few years ago, I thought maybe this was it. Maybe I was complete, Maybe I've done what I was supposed to do."

But just when Moore thought it was all over, in came The Substance. She revealed, “As I was at kind of a low point, this magical, bold, courageous, out of the box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called The Substance. And the universe told me that, 'You're not done.' I am so grateful to Coralie [Fargeat] for trusting me to step in and play this woman. For Margaret [Qualley] for being the other half of me.”

Moore ended her speech with this- “I'll just leave you with one thing that I think this movie is imparting. In those moments when we don't think we're smart enough or pretty enough or skinny enough or successful enough — or basically, just not enough — I had a woman say to me, 'Just know, you will never be enough. But you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.'"

In the end, the actress said the award was a “marker of my wholeness and of the love that is driving me. For the gift of doing something I love and being reminded that I do belong, thank you so much.”

In The Substance, Demi Moore stars as Elisabeth Sparkle, a fitness star whose show gets canceled because of her age. To get her career and life back, she decides to try The Substance, a black-market drug that splits her into Sue, the younger version of her. This results in a battle with herself that comes with unexpected side effects.
