If you are a fan of classic movies and were saddened by the news of FilmStruck shutting down, we have some good news for you. The platform’s content will continue to live on with Criterion promising that a new service will be available in 2019 with all of your favorites including Art-House America, Ten Minutes of less, Friday Double Night Feature and more.
Criterion officially announced its upcoming service stating “The Criterion Channel will be picking up where the old service left off, programming director spotlights and actor retrospectives featuring major Hollywood and international classics and hard-to-find discoveries from around the world, complete with special features like commentaries, behind-the-scenes footage, and original documentaries.”
Reports of FilmStruck shutting down came in after WarnerMedia revealed that it would be shutting the classic cinema streaming service. Many fans originally expected FilmStruck to move back to Hulu, but it turns out that is not happening. Criterion will be responsible for keeping the content alive, and its expertise in restoring rare classics will definitely help fans who love seeing content from the past.
Criterion offers not only a streaming service for its content, but it also offers physical discs of its collection of classic movies. The company will continue where it left off after WarnerMedia pulled the plug and we can expect all of the iconic content from FilmStruck to be available along with new additions.
The new service will be wholly owned by Criterion and it will be available in the US and Canada at launch. Availability in more regions will be added eventually for fans. FilmStruck will be shut down on November 29, and we will have to wait until Spring 2019 to get access to the upcoming Criterion Channel.
