Plot

Companion keeps its plot details under wraps, with only a vague hint from New Line Cinema describing it as “a new kind of love story.” From the teaser trailer, we gather that Jack Quaid’s character holds a disturbing control over Sophie Thatcher’s, hinting at a twisted power dynamic.

Set in a dystopian future, the narrative revolves around their toxic relationship, suggesting that Thatcher’s character may not be human, possibly an android, and is gearing up to fight back.

The film dives deep into manipulation, with Quaid’s character portrayed as a charming yet unpredictable figure. Thatcher’s role is intense, pushing boundaries as she battles against his control.

Directed by Drew Hancock, Companion masterfully blends suspense and drama, keeping audiences captivated throughout.

Cast

Official Teaser Trailer

The trailer for Companion opens with The Flamingos’ “I Only Have Eyes for You,” evoking a romantic tone, only to quickly subvert it with unsettling visuals. Sophie Thatcher's character is shown handcuffed to a chair, seemingly forced into a sinister dinner by Jack Quaid's eerily smiling character. As scenes of violence flash, Thatcher's voiceover talks of a “spark” between them.

The tension escalates as she is dragged through a forest, stabs an attacker, and holds her hand over a candle flame until she catches fire. Check out the teaser trailer below.

Behind the Scenes

Drew Hancock makes his feature directorial debut with Companion, a psychological thriller produced by the team behind Barbarian. Hancock, who also penned the script, has previously worked on TV projects such as Blue Mountain State and Suburgatory.

Barbarian director Zach Cregger initially eyed the film as his next project, but eventually, Hancock took the helm. Companion is produced by BoulderLight Pictures in collaboration with New Line Cinema under a first-look deal. This marks the first film produced through this partnership, following New Line's competitive acquisition of Cregger’s next feature, Weapons.

Producers include Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, Roy Lee, and Zach Cregger, while Tracy Rosenblum and Jamie Buckner serve as executive producers. Eli Born is the cinematographer, Scott Kuzio is the production designer, and Hrishikesh Hirway provides the music.
