Boruto's current anime-only arc has given fans insight into the Land of Water and its residents. The previous episode saw Sarada and Mitsuki regrouping with Team 5 after infiltrating Doto island for recon. The Boruto series is currently amid the "Great Sea Battle of Kirigakure Arc," which several fans consider a filler arc since it's not manga canon. Let's take a look at what happened in episode 236.
The "Great Sea Battle of Kirigakure Arc" began in episode 232, with Team 5 being assigned a B-rank mission to the Land of Water. Episode 236 saw a large Funato fortress approaching Kagura, who deduces it was built using technology stolen from Kirigakure, as the Funato have never had this kind of firepower. Kagura sends Boruto, Kawaki, and Buntan to check the fortress out close.
Meanwhile, Team 5 shows Mitsuki and Sarada how the Funato have organized at Doto Island and where they're holding the islander's hostage. Team 5 goes to the harbor to hijack a large ship while Sarada and Mitsuki rescue the captive miners and researchers. On the other hand, Boruto, Kawaki, and Buntan make it onto the fortress. The fort commander, Tenma, receives word that Isari rescued their father.
In addition, one of the miners reveals to Tenma's men on the island that there are Leaf researchers mixed in with the miners. The Funato leader concludes the shinobi will try to rescue their allies. However, Mitsuki and Sarada successfully free the hostages from the mines. Denki takes out the Funato in the ship with a smoke-flash bomb but struggles to hotwire the ship. The Funato leader signals the main force to join him while the Konoha shinobi prevent them from getting on the ship.
Denki manages to hotwire the ship, and they manage to escape! Meanwhile, Buntan cures Kawaki's motion sickness and discovers a giant Scientific Ninja Tool cannon on deck. Kagura waits for them while another Funato boat approaches.
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations runs a weekly schedule with new series episodes coming out every Sunday. The current arc in the Boruto series is anime canon; however, according to several fans, it doesn't matter if an episode is "anime canon" or "mixed canon." It is widely believed that if the events didn't happen in the manga, they could not be considered canon.
