Louise's birth marked a groundbreaking moment in medical history as the first successful human IVF birth.
Edwards received a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2010 for his work. Louise, now an IVF ambassador, celebrates this medical milestone as one of the 20th century’s most remarkable breakthroughs.
Jack Thorne and Ben Taylor shared how their personal IVF experiences shaped the creation of Joy. Taylor, a father to two boys through IVF, said in an interview with Screen Daily, “As the proud father to two boys only made possible by IVF, this is a story extremely close to my heart.”
Thorne, who experienced seven IVF rounds with his wife Rachel, emphasized the awe-inspiring and groundbreaking nature of the pioneers' work. He said in the same interview, “The more we discovered, the more amazed we were, at the audacity of the science and the lack of support from the scientific community. It is an incredible story.”

Filming for Joy began in September 2023 and wrapped up on Jan. 23, 2024. The production happened in the United Kingdom.
Joy is directed by Ben Taylor (Sex Education), with a screenplay by Jack Thorne, who co-developed the story with his wife, Rachel Mason, along with Emma Gordon and Shaun Topp. Produced by Wildgaze Films and Pathé for Netflix, the film is executive produced by Cameron McCracken. Cinematography is by Jamie Cairney, with casting by Lucy Bevan and Olivia Grant. Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey of Wildgaze lead the production.
