Maybe Barbie fans will keep on partying as news keeps trickling in about a possible sequel to the 2023 box-office behemoth that grossed $1.4 billion globally. Starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the Barbie movie earned an 88% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
That’s not all. The movie also got a whopping eight Oscar nominations. Now, as per a new report, Barbie 2 might just happen. In this article, we will discuss everything we know about a possible sequel.
Previously, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz had told Time magazine that they want to make Barbie movies. He said, “We're looking to create movies that become cultural events. If you can excite filmmakers like Greta and Noah to embrace the opportunity and have creative freedom, you can have a real impact.”
At that time, almost everyone involved with the Barbie film was not too keen on making a sequel. But maybe that has changed. As per a THR report, Barbie 2 is indeed in early development.
The outlet said, “Gerwig and Baumbach have been swept up in an undertow and hatched an idea for the sequel, having already brought it to Warner Bros. While it’s said to be in ‘early stages.’” They also wrote, “Per one source, Baumbach would get started on writing the Barbie sequel, with the two passing it back and forth as they typically do.”
However, there’s a twist.
THR themselves state that the representatives for Warner Bros, Noah Baumbach, and Greta Gerwig have pushed back against this reporting. The company’s reps said, “THR’s reporting is inaccurate” whereas Gerwig and Baumbach’s reps said, “There is no legitimacy to this reporting.”
The outlet notes that if a deal happens, the creative pair will work on script as soon as they done with their upcoming projects. Gerwig is busy with the Netflix adaptation of Narnia while Baumbach is working on the upcoming Jay Kelly film for Netflix as well, in which Gerwig also stars.
As for what the Barbie sequel plot might be, if it indeed is in development, that isn’t going to be known this early on.
Barbie is streaming on Max.
