What is Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing About?

Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing is a gripping docuseries that pulls back the curtain on the shadowy world of child influencers, centering on the meteoric rise of YouTube star Piper Rockelle and the disturbing allegations against her mother and manager, Tiffany Smith.

What began as innocent prank videos and trendy challenges soon transformed into a multi-million-dollar empire, racking up billions of views. Piper, now 17, started her online career at just 8 years old, quickly becoming a social media sensation with the help of her mom and her mother’s boyfriend, Hunter Hill. She was the face of a content machine—and behind her, a handpicked group of fellow kid influencers known as The Squad.

But behind the scenes, a darker story was unfolding.

Through candid interviews with former Squad members and their families, Bad Influence reveals troubling accounts of manipulation, control, and emotional—and at times, even physical—abuse allegedly orchestrated by Tiffany. Many describe the environment around Piper as cult-like, with intense filming schedules, pressure to sexualize content, and punishments for those who pushed back.

The series also questions the role of parents and managers in the influencer industry, particularly when their children's content draws a largely adult male audience. As Piper’s empire grew, so did concerns about her well-being and that of her collaborators.

Is There a Trailer for Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing?

The trailer for Netflix's upcoming docuseries, Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing, offers a compelling glimpse into the complex world of child influencers, focusing on Piper Rockelle and her mother-manager, Tiffany Smith.

The opening scene features a director's cue, "It's Piper, go!" followed by a montage highlighting Piper's rapid ascent to fame, with a voiceover noting, "Piper Rockelle is an incredibly popular child influencer... This young lady's amassed more than 10 million followers on YouTube."

The narrative then shifts to Tiffany Smith's pivotal role, describing her as the "momager" who "took these kids to massive viral fame." However, the tone darkens as interviewees suggest underlying issues, stating, "It seemed so innocent, but it wasn't innocent at all."

Concerns are raised about Tiffany's methods, with claims that she "finds people who want to be famous" and then "takes advantage of them." The clip also mentions that the kids' channels were pulling in up to $500,000 per month, prompting one commentator to warn, “Things can get very muddy when kids are making an obscene amount of money.”

The trailer alleges Smith sexualized minors to boost views, noting that Rockelle’s fanbase was largely made up of adult men. “She would be like, over and over, ‘Sex sells. Make it sexy,’” one voice says over footage of kids posing for videos.

Contributors claim Smith controlled everything, from how the kids hugged to how they dressed, and pushed them to film up to 15 videos a day. “It’s like a cult or something, like you can’t get out,” says one woman in a confessional. In the end, another girl warns, “It’s not just these kids. It’s so many others. And if something isn’t done, these won’t be the last kids.

Throughout the trailer, former members of "The Squad" and their parents provide candid interviews, sharing their experiences and shedding light on the challenges and potential exploitation within the child influencer industry.

Who is Piper Rockelle?

Piper Rockelle is a 17-year-old actress and social media influencer who began her rise to fame at just 8 years old. Before becoming known for her viral content, she appeared in various dance and acting roles on both scripted and reality-style shows.

With support from her mother and her mom’s boyfriend, Hunter Hill, Piper grew her YouTube channel and social media presence into a multimillion-follower empire, reportedly earning over half a million dollars per month at her peak through brand deals and other income sources. (via Tudum)

What is The Squad?

The Squad was a rotating group of tween content creators who began appearing in Piper Rockelle’s videos around 2017. They collaborated on YouTube content and often promoted each other’s social media channels. As per Tudum:

"Squad members have included Sophie Fergi, Gavin Magnus, Sawyer Sharbino, Hayden Haas, Corinne Joy, Jentzen Ramirez, Claire RockSmith, and Symonne Harrison, among others. Eventually, some members of The Squad moved in with Piper and her mother in order to increase their content output."

Although the videos projected fun and friendship, behind the scenes, tensions grew as some parents became concerned about Tiffany Smith’s behavior—eventually prompting them to pull their kids from the group.

What Happened Between Tiffany Smith, Piper Rockelle, and The Squad Members?

Tensions between Tiffany Smith and some parents of Squad members began when concerns were raised about how she directed their children’s behavior both on and off camera. According to multiple accounts, Smith would allegedly retaliate against those who questioned her authority.

Over time, several Squad members came forward with serious accusations, and in January 2022, 11 of them filed a lawsuit claiming they had been exploited and “frequently subjected to an emotionally, physically and sometimes sexually abusive environment perpetrated by Piper’s mom,” (via Tudum) per the lawsuit. Smith has publicly denied the allegations. The docuseries explores the background and detailed claims involved in the case.
