The wait for this year’s lineup of iPhones is finally over as Apple finally unveiled two new flagship phones. The iPhone Xs and the iPhone Xs Max will go on sale soon with premium specs and design enhancements over last year’s iPhone X. Aside from the two new models, the company's has introduced a budget variant callet iPhone XR.
The new phones will be available in gold, silver, and space gray and are aesthetically similar to the iPhone X. As expected, it’s been an ‘S’ year for Apple with minor upgrades when it comes to design. The Cupertino tech giant is bringing a new glass formulation for added durability for its flagship smartphones. The devices will also come with IP68 protection for added durability.
The iPhone Xs comes with an OLED Super Retina display of the same resolution as the Apple iPhone X. However, the new display has 60% more dynamic range and measures 5.8 inches. The iPhone Xs Max comes with a 6.5” display.
Apple has retained the notched display to allow a large number of sensors to be included. The sensors built into the front panel have also been upgraded with improved Face ID and a faster secure enclave.
The highlight of the new flagship iPhones is Apple’s new A12 Bionic chip. It is the industry’s first 7nm chip and is packed with 6.9 billion transistors. The CPU has 6 cores which include two high-performance cores marketed to be 15% faster and 40% less power hungry than the A11 chipset.
A new 4-core GPU has also been included which is said to be 50% faster than the previous generation A11 chipset. The dedicated neural engine also got an upgrade with an 8-core dedicated machine learning processor.
AR is a selling point for the iPhone Xs and Xs Max with iOS integrating ARKit support. Apple is partnering with Bethesda to offer AR features in Elder Scrolls Blades. The new iPhones will offer up to 512GB of storage, the highest for any iPhone till date.
The new iPhone Xs camera comes with a 12 MP camera and a 12 MP telephoto lens as part of a dual lens setup. The devices will come with new sensors that offer an f.18 aperture on the primary lens and an f.24 aperture on the telephoto lens. The Truetone flash will come with an advanced flicker system to offer better low light photos. The front camera is a 7MP unit with f2.2 aperture and a faster sensor to take quick selfies. Smart HDR is being implemented on the camera and portrait mode photos will come with better bokeh.
Overall, the features on the new iPhone Xs and the Xs Max are quite impressive and fans can expect noticeable performance improvements. Apple is also debuting dual sim connectivity for the first time for select regions that do not allow eSIM connectivity. Both devices will be available soon via major carriers in the US very soon, and a global launch will soon follow suit.
