Amazon’s Fire TV Recast is scheduled for launch in just over a month, and the much anticipated over-the-air DVR service is already receiving a number of improvements ahead of its launch. Amazon had already promised the ability to use external USB storage devices for recording and streaming purposes as the feature is expected to release soon after the service goes live.

The Fire TV Recast may also allow users to skip advertisements according to a reporter from Variety, who got a closer look at the service. The Fire TV Recast is capable of automatically recognizing if a Fire TV is connected on the same network as the DVR device and offer contextual menus to control your media playback. Moreover, you also get access to a new “On Now” menu that showcases ongoing live programming in a clean navigation menu at the top of the TV interface.

Amazon has officially confirmed that they are considering adding the option of skipping commercials on the Fire TV Recast. The feature is similar to what other DVR services already offer. If enabled, users can choose commercials to be skipped automatically or with a simple click. Users can skip 30 seconds of programming to get past the commercials and continue watching their favorite TV shows and movies.

Outside of the channel programming menu that allows users to see all content on offer, users will also get access to a discovery menu that will offer users the ability to check out content recommended by Amazon’s curation. However, according to reports, there will be no ability to sort over-the-air content using advanced filters at launch. With just weeks away from launch, we can expect the new service to be competitively priced to combat the likes of Plex and Tivo.
