Amazon announced the new 2018 model of the Fire HD 8 tablet. There are no major upgrades to the device outside of a new front-facing camera that has been bumped up to 2MP from a VGA unit. The camera will allow 720p video recording, which is a big plus for users who are looking for a device with video calling capabilities.
The new tablet comes with 16 GB storage, which comes with a microSD slot that can accommodate up to 400GB of additional storage. Under the hood, there is a quad-core 1.3 GHz processor and 1.5GB RAM. Amazon promises 10 hours of usage on the device, and it is modestly priced at just $79.99.
The Amazon Fire HD devices are targeted towards users who are looking for a cheap tablet with a wide selection of features. The price of the device makes it the perfect device for kids or for use during travel. It comes with Google's Android but Google Play functionality is missing. Instead, you get access to Amazon's own suite of apps and app downloads are through the Amazon AppStore.
Amazon also introduced the Fire HD 8 Kids edition which comes with colorful bumpers and offers a two-year guarantee. Users also get access to Freetime Unlimited which is similar to Kindle Unlimited but offers a curated collection of books, videos, apps, and games catered towards kids. Over 100 audible audiobooks are also available along with Spanish content.
Amazon’s new Fire HD 8 tablet comes with smart assistant Alexa. Alexa is also set to receive Microsoft Cortana integration as well as integration with major TV providers. The tablet can double up as an Amazon Echo device with the added advantage of having a display. Amazon has put the product up for preorders starting at $79.99, and you can also purchase a bundle with the Show Mode dock priced at $94.99.
