Severance has gripped audiences with its eerie corporate dystopia. People tune in every week to discover more about Lumon Industries. The Apple TV+ thriller follows Mark Scout as he begins questioning the company's controversial severance procedure, which splits employees into separate work and personal identities.

Season two ended with yet another shocking cliffhanger, leaving fans desperate for answers. Just as Mark and his colleagues seemed closer to uncovering the truth, unexpected betrayals and chaotic revelations threw their plans into jeopardy. The finale raised more questions than ever—about Lumon’s true motives, the fate of certain characters, and whether freedom is even possible within the company’s walls.

Thankfully, Severance season three is already in the works. Apple TV+ officially announced the renewal as well just a day after the season two finale. Ben Stiller has reassured fans that the team is actively developing the next chapter. So, what’s next for Mark, Helly, and the rest of the severed employees? Keep reading for all the latest updates and stay tuned as we continue to track new developments!

Release date & Where to Watch

While no official release date has been confirmed, production is already underway.

Ben Stiller has assured fans that the wait for Severance season three won’t be as long as the nearly three-year gap between seasons one and two. Speaking on Jason and Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast, Stiller said, “No, the plan is not to [wait three years]. Hopefully, we’ll be announcing what the plan is very soon.” (via Independent.co.uk)

Series creator Dan Erickson also expressed hope for a quicker turnaround, telling Gizmodo, “I certainly would like it to [take less time].” He acknowledged that both previous seasons took around three years to make but emphasized efforts to streamline the process for season three.

What is the plot of Severance Season 3?

Severance season three would likely pick up right after the season two cliffhanger, where Innie Mark locked Gemma out of Lumon and ran back inside with Helly. While the plot remains under wraps, Dichen Lachman, who plays Gemma, shared her own theories with Radio Times, speculating that Lumon has been monitoring Gemma for some time and that the fertility clinic could be part of their larger operation.

And it feels like there’s something with the blood,” she said, adding, “Maybe this whole place is run by Lumon—they have their finger in every pie.”

The finale also left several key characters with unresolved fates. Burt saved Irving by banishing him from Kier, but their stories are far from over. Meanwhile, Milchick ended the season surrounded by his subordinates, who were ready to fight for their rights—but whether he joins them or stays loyal to Lumon remains uncertain.

The biggest shock came in the final moments when Ms. Casey escaped the Severed Floor. As she stepped into the stairwell, she switched back to Gemma and called for Mark, but he chose a different path. He ran toward Helly, betraying his Outie’s trust to chase his own love story.

As for what’s next, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed, “Ben Stiller says there is a [Season 3] writers room underway in L.A.”

Creator Dan Erickson told Decider what the new season can bring, “There will probably be some office stuff. There will probably be some existential stuff. There will probably be a laugh or two. There will probably be some creepy moments. It’s going to be all the things that the show is—assuming that it happens.

With so many unanswered questions—Lumon’s true agenda, the extent of its corruption, and the fate of its employees—Season three has plenty to explore.

Who Could be in the cast of a Potential Severance Season 3?

Ólafur Darri Ólafsson is unlikely to return as Mr. Drummond after his brutal death in the season two finale. While he was the only confirmed casualty, several characters’ fates remain uncertain, including Irving and Burt, who were both fired from Lumon. However, their stories feel far from over, so a comeback wouldn’t be surprising.

Is There a Trailer for Severance Season 3?

It's still too soon for a trailer, but we'll update this section as soon as one is released.

What Happens at the end of Severance Season 2?

In the season two finale of "Severance," Mark Scout's innie embarks on a daring mission to rescue his wife, Gemma, from Lumon's control. With assistance from Harmony Cobel, he successfully extracts Gemma from the severed floor. However, in a poignant twist, Mark chooses to remain behind with Helly, prioritizing his innie's desires over his outie's life, leaving viewers with a cliffhanger ending.

Simultaneously, the episode delves into Harmony Cobel's backstory, revealing her as the original architect of the severance procedure. This revelation positions her as a potential ally in the fight against Lumon.

The finale also highlights the complex dynamics between the innies and outies, emphasizing themes of identity and autonomy. The season concludes with unresolved questions about Lumon's true intentions and the fate of the severed employees, setting the stage for an anticipated season three.

Did Burt and Irving get together?

Severance’s central queer storyline explores the complex Innie-Outie dynamics of Burt and Irving. But did the two finally get together in season two? Unfortunately, no.

After another season of ‘will-they-won’t-they,’ it seems the answer is no. Season one revealed that Burt’s Outie was already married, and in season two’s penultimate episode, “The After Hours,” Burt breaks into Irving’s flat, drives him to a train station, and buys him a one-way ticket—warning him not to return. The two share their feelings, but that appears to be the end of their story.

How many Seasons will Severance span?

Speaking to Esquire, Dan Erickson shared that, “There's an overall plan for the show. I have an end point in mind, and I intentionally didn't plan it season by season, because I wanted it to be flexible enough that we could get there in two seasons or six seasons. I want to allow us to be surprised by where the show goes. There’s a sense of what Lumon is trying to do and the role that our main characters are going to play in that, and where it all will culminate. It's really exciting to think about taking the next step on that trip.

Although season two has just concluded, plans for future seasons are already in motion. Co-executive producer Mohamad El Masri confirmed that the show's full arc has been mapped out, with work on season three beginning during season two’s production.

The creative team has been mindful of how season two sets up future storylines. However, when it comes to the wait between seasons, El Masri admitted that Hollywood’s unpredictable production timelines make it difficult to predict.

Behind the Scenes

Writer, producer, actor, and director Ben Stiller confirmed that the writers have assembled in Los Angeles to begin work on the next season of Severance. The Writers Guild of America database recently listed two new showrunners, Eli E. Jorne and Mary Laws, for the upcoming season, further confirming its development.

Speaking with Collider ahead of the season two premiere, Stiller emphasized the importance of having a clear narrative direction: “You have a responsibility to the audience that you’re going somewhere with it,” he said. He reassured fans that Apple has supported the show's vision, prioritizing storytelling over indefinite expansion.

Stiller elaborated, “It should go as long as the story goes, and that’s something we have an idea of and we’re working towards as we’re starting up our season three work.” According to Bloomberg, season two cost a staggering $20 million per episode, but Apple remains committed to the series.

Stiller assured THR that the quality of Severance will remain intact. “Everything changed a lot after the strike, for everyone, in terms of the way people are looking at budgets and spending. To Apple’s credit, they stayed on track with what the show was, and they’ve supported it.”
