What is The Rookie Season 7 About?

Season seven of The Rookie picks up with several unresolved threads from season six, most notably the escape of Oscar, which promises to wreak havoc on Nolan and his team. The absence of Bailey Nune from some episodes due to Jenna Dewan's pregnancy might impact the storyline, but new challenges and threats will emerge to keep things intense.

ABC’s official synopsis reveals that Nolan, now recovering from a gunshot wound, must continue balancing his life and career as he and his team welcome two new rookies while hunting down two dangerous escaped prisoners with personal vendettas.

Showrunner Alexi Hawley hinted that the season will capture the essence of earlier seasons, with fun elements like plain clothes days, rookie roundups, and food truck hangouts. There will also be more focus on the characters' personal lives, with family members making appearances and new ones being introduced.

The season will feature emotionally charged episodes and dynamic dark serial killer storylines. A Valentine's Day and an April Fools episode are also on the way, but there won't be an undercover plot like previous seasons. Despite the darker themes, Hawley promises an engaging mix of high stakes and character-driven drama.

While specific details for season seven are under wraps, production is focused on minimizing gaps in the release schedule to keep fans engaged with a consistent flow of episodes. The show aims for a larger scale this season, with Hawley emphasizing the importance of maintaining the balance between intense drama and the beloved characters fans have grown to love.

Who’s Starring in The Rookie Season 7?

Official Trailer

The Rookie season 7 trailer, set to the tune of Billy Squire's hit "The Stroke," offers a glimpse of Nolan and his LAPD colleagues in action, tackling violent criminals and investigating high-stakes cases. With a powerful line about how one never stops "being a rookie," the trailer ends with a surprising moment as Nolan apprehends a suspect using a motorized scooter.

The trailer also introduces two new rookies, hinting at the drama and challenges ahead when the series returns with fresh episodes.

Episode Schedule

This is the release schedule for now:

Is Tru Valentino Leaving The Rookie?

Yes, Tru Valentino, who played Officer Aaron Thorsen on The Rookie, is leaving the series as a regular for season seven. Valentino confirmed his departure in August 2023, expressing gratitude for his time on the show and the relationships he built.

While Valentino will not be returning as a series regular, he left the door open for a potential return, writing on Instagram, "You never know who may pop back up in the Mid-Wilshire Precinct."

Series creator Alexi Hawley explained that Aaron's story arc had reached a natural conclusion, with his character transferring to a new station to escape the stigma of being associated with the corrupt therapist, Blair London. However, Hawley confirmed that Aaron's exit doesn't rule out a return in the future, as the character still exists in the show's universe.

The focus for season seven will be on introducing new rookies and exploring fresh creative directions, but Thorsen’s storyline may not be fully closed. Valentino's exit marks the end of his regular role after three seasons, but fans may still see him pop up in future episodes.

What Happened in The Rookie Season 6 finale?

The Rookie season six finale delivered a thrilling and action-packed conclusion with a major cliffhanger. Bailey's abusive ex-husband Jason and his accomplice Oscar escaped from prison, setting the stage for a dangerous confrontation as they plotted to come after her.

The episode also continued the dark influence of Monica Stevens, a ruthless lawyer with a criminal clientele in Los Angeles. Monica manipulated Dr. Blair London, the LAPD therapist, to provide confidential therapy information, which she then sold to the criminals on her payroll.

Monica had helped Blair years ago when Blair accidentally hit someone while drunk, creating an indebtedness that Blair couldn't escape. As tensions rose, Eric Ramsay targetted Monica, forcing her to act fast. Monica’s plan involved getting Oscar to beat up Ramsay’s lieutenant, while she arranged for him, along with Jason, to escape from prison.

She also recruited money launderer Christian Bautista to send a hit squad to the laundromat where Gundo was waiting to collect $2 million from her in blackmail. Monica’s endgame was to force Blair to travel to Argentina with her to meet Ramsay’s benefactor.

Meanwhile, Lucy Chen, working as a nanny for Bautista, uncovered the operation at the laundromat. When police arrived, chaos ensued, and a hitman tried to flee. Bradford leapt into the truck to stop him, and Lucy followed to rescue him.

Nolan and Harper flew to Argentina on a federal jet, despite being ordered not to rescue Blair. Ignoring orders, Nolan got involved in a shootout, leading to Blair’s extradition back to the US while Monica escaped. Back home after Nolan is shot in the butt during the Argentina mission, he and Bailey get blindsided by the news of the prison break, setting the stage for a tense new chapter.
