What is the plot of Grace Season 5?

The Brighton-set series, based on Peter James’ bestselling novels, first aired in March 2021, with John Simm starring as Detective Superintendent Roy Grace. Over four seasons, Roy and his partner Glenn Branson have tackled intense cases, from missing persons to brutal crimes.

The upcoming season five will continue this gripping trend with four new episodes adapting James’ novels: Dead If You Don’t, Dead At First Sight, Need You Dead, and Find Them Dead. Season four ended with Roy reuniting with his long-lost wife, Sandy (Clare Calbraith), only for her to die by suicide shortly after.

In season five, Roy and his partner Cleo Morey face another heartbreaking tragedy as they deal with the loss of their baby. Speaking to Radio Times, John Simm shared, “When we find Cleo and Roy, they are dealing with the loss of a child, which has obviously happened between the series. You realise quite quickly what's happened.” (via Radio Times)

Tapper added, “You find out very early on that she's lost the baby… dealing with this really devastating loss.” As Cleo takes bereavement leave, Roy is forced to return to work, leading them to grieve separately. The season kicks off with Dead If You Don’t, where a missing teenager case leads Roy into a dangerous world of organized crime, a stadium bomb threat, and a chilling murder on a Sussex beach. As the pressure mounts, Roy must navigate corruption and deception to save innocent lives.

In Dead At First Sight, a hotel murder investigation exposes a web of online fraud, mistaken identity, and revenge. With tensions running high following the stadium attack, Major Crime welcomes a new recruit, DC Vee Wilde, while Roy’s team races to unmask a killer who will stop at nothing for vengeance.

Need You Dead follows the murder of a well-known psychiatrist and mental health app founder. While her death initially appears to be a break-in gone wrong, Roy soon uncovers a list of suspects, including an ex-husband, a stalker, and a secret lover. As the case unravels, it takes a sinister turn, revealing shocking secrets that shake Roy’s world.

Finally, Find Them Dead sees Roy preparing for the trial of a notorious drug lord known as ‘The Merchant.’ When key witnesses start disappearing, it becomes clear that someone is manipulating the case from the outside. Meanwhile, Brighton resident Megan Magellan, selected for jury duty, finds herself caught in a terrifying dilemma. As Roy battles to bring the criminal mastermind to justice, a double murder throws his team into another high-stakes investigation, leading to an unsettling revelation that burdens him with a terrible secret.
