What is the plot of Babygirl?

Babygirl follows Romy, a high-powered CEO of a robotics company, who seemingly has it all—a successful career, a loving husband, and two daughters. However, beneath the surface, she feels disconnected, particularly in her sexuality. This dissatisfaction leads her to start a forbidden affair with Samuel, a much younger intern, that soon dives into the world of BDSM and sexual power dynamics.

As their relationship intensifies, Romy finds herself drawn to Samuel’s dominating nature, despite the risks it poses to her career and family. The affair explores the complexities of desire, the double standards surrounding age gaps, and the struggle to balance personal fulfillment with societal expectations.

Directed by Halina Reijn, Babygirl delves into the vulnerabilities of its characters, with Kidman describing the experience as the most exposing of her career. The film not only challenges power dynamics in the workplace but also reflects on how deeply sexual relationships can influence one’s identity and self-worth.

Despite Romy’s outward perfection, she becomes more entangled in her affair with Samuel, ultimately discovering a side of herself she had repressed for years. The film is a daring exploration of liberation, dominance, and the boundaries of control, resonating with films like Secretary for its exploration of BDSM and unorthodox power exchanges.

Behind the Scenes

Written, directed, and co-produced by Halina Reijn, Babygirl is a 2024 American erotic thriller marking Reijn's latest collaboration with A24 after the success of Bodies Bodies Bodies. Reijn revealed she envisioned Nicole Kidman as Romy, the film's lead, from the start, a choice that resonated deeply with the actress.

Kidman praised Reijn's approach as a female director, highlighting the sense of safety and creative partnership she felt during production. Speaking at a press conference ahead of the film's Venice debut, Kidman shared, "Being in the hands of Halina, I knew I wasn’t going to be exploited. I felt entirely part of the story I wanted to tell, and every part of me was committed to that."

In an October Q&A, Kidman expanded on the unique perspective of the film, which flips the traditional narrative to portray a woman in power engaging in an affair with a younger employee. She described the experience as "liberating," crediting Reijn's reassurance throughout the process. "Halina made it clear I would be protected, and nothing in the film would cross my boundaries. That trust made all the difference."
