Release date & Where to Watch

A Minecraft Movie is set to hit theaters and IMAX on Friday, April 4, 2025.

Plot

The official plot for A Minecraft Movie follows four outcasts—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn—who are pulled into the Overworld, a strange, cubic land, where creativity is essential for survival. To return home, they must master the Minecraft world while battling enemies like Piglins and Zombies. They are guided by Steve, an expert crafter, as they embark on a magical quest that challenges them to reconnect with their unique qualities and creativity—the very skills they’ll need to succeed in the real world.

While the game itself lacks a plot, the movie incorporates classic elements like iconic enemies (Creepers, Endermen) and locations such as The Nether and The End. The adventure not only highlights the game's world but also explores the characters' growth as they learn to thrive in both the game and reality.

Cast

Official Teaser

Warner Bros. released the first teaser for A Minecraft Movie on Sept. 4, 2024. Running just under 80 seconds, the teaser showcases the film’s adaptation of the game’s blocky aesthetic and is set to The Beatles' "Magical Mystery Tour." The trailer offers a glimpse of the four main characters exploring the Overworld and meeting Jack Black’s Steve, though little about the plot is revealed. Notably, The Beatles' music is rarely used in film marketing, with only two other films in the past decade featuring their songs in trailers.

Where was A Minecraft Movie Filmed?

Filming for A Minecraft Movie was initially scheduled to begin in New Zealand on Aug. 7, 2023, but was delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Production eventually started in January 2024, and it was also in New Zealand. In April 2024, Jason Momoa shared on Instagram that he had wrapped filming for the movie.

Behind the Scenes

Jared Hess, known for his work on cult comedies Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, directs A Minecraft Movie. Hess teams up with frequent collaborators Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer, who penned the script. The movie is produced by Roy Lee (The Lego Movie), Jon Berg (Elf), Mary Parent and Cale Boyter (Dune), Microsoft’s Torfi Frans Olafsson, Mojang Studios' Vu Bui, and the late Jill Messick (Mean Girls).

Behind the scenes, the movie boasts an impressive creative team. Enrique Chediak (127 Hours) serves as the director of photography, Grant Major (The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King) is the production designer, James Thomas (Borat) is the editor, and Dan Lemmon (The Jungle Book) leads the VFX team. Amanda Neale (What We Do in the Shadows) designs the costumes, while Mark Mothersbaugh (The Lego Movie) composes the score.

The film marks another collaboration between Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, known for projects like Dune and the Monsterverse.

A Minecraft Movie has gone through several director changes over the years. Initially, Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) was attached, with a script from Kieran and Michele Mulroney (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows). Levy envisioned the film as an adventure with a “Goonies flair,” but left in 2014 due to creative differences with Mojang. In 2016, Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) took over and worked with Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman) on a version focusing on player agency in a digital world. However, after a change in studio leadership, McElhenney’s version was scrapped.

Later, Adam and Aaron Nee (The Lost City) worked on rewrites before Peter Sollett (Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist) was brought on to direct in 2019, with a new script focusing on a female protagonist battling an Ender Dragon. Academy Award-nominated writer Allison Schroeder (Hidden Figures) later joined to revise the script.

After several shifts in creative vision, Jared Hess was eventually selected to direct, bringing his signature comedic style to the project.
