A Minecraft Movie is now in theaters, and irrespective of reviews, viewers are fascinated by the film and the post-credits scenes. The movie is about 4 ordinary humans who come to the Overworld and meet Steve, a human who has become an expert crafter.
All together, they work to harness the crafting possibilities of the Overworld to go back to Earth. The ending of the film isn’t convoluted or sad, and for a film that was mainly aimed at kids, that doesn’t seem too shocking.
A Minecraft Movie comes with two post-credit scenes- one in the middle and another one at the very end. In this article, we will find out what happens in them and how they set up a sequel.
The first one concludes a subplot of the film- Jennifer Coolidge's Vice Principal Marlene’s romance with a Villager in the Overworld. In the beginning, she falls in love with the Villager while on a date.
The mid-credits scene shows the Villager confessing his love for Marlene, and the scene ends with their engagement. So, they get a happy ending, and we finally realize that Matt Berry (What We Do In The Shadows) voiced the Villager.
The second post-credits scene shows Steve returning to his childhood home. This is interesting because a lot of time had passed since he left Earth. Jack Black’s character knocks on the door, and he is greeted by a woman with reddish-orange hair.
It seems like she is now living in his home. We never see the face of the woman, but she says that her name is Alex. Steve reacts as if he knows who the woman is.
Fans of the Minecraft game will know who Alex is. Alex is one of the 9 default skins present in the game. In fact, Alex was the second skin introduced in the 2014 Minecraft Java Edition. In the game, Alex is shown with pale skin, green eyes, and long orange hair.
She also wears a green shirt. In the film, we don’t get to see her face, but her orange hair and green shirt are visible. Also, we get the confirmation that Alex is a woman, played by Kate McKinnon.
Steve's reaction means that if the film gets a sequel, it could explore their relationship or friendship with each other. After all, Alex and Steve are often seen together in the game. Also, this could mean that Steve will return to the Overworld again.
Now that Alex is here, could we also see the other skins, like Makena, Noor, Efe, Kai, Ari, and Zuri? This film juggled five characters so we could see at least some more in the next one.
At the time of writing, it isn’t confirmed whether or not Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Jennifer Coolidge, and the other characters will return for a possible sequel. However, Momoa already has ideas about what to call it. In an interview with ExtraTV he said: “We’ll call it ‘Another Minecraft Movie’ and then we’ll call it ‘And Another Minecraft Movie.’”
However, even if the current cast doesn't return, there are endless directions the sequel can take. Director Jared Hess said (via GameSpot):
“[The world of Minecraft is] endless. I mean, there's so many biomes, so many c*azy, amazing characters and creatures we haven't even touched on. And, you know, Alex [is] one of the massively iconic characters, right on equal ground with Steve. You can't fit everything in one movie, so you've got to kind of parse it out thinking ahead. But if this one does well, man we're excited to jump back in."
Torfi Frans Olafsson, senior director of Minecraft Entertainment and Online, added: “In all seriousness, not only do we have other dimensions, other mobs, but also other ways of playing Minecraft, because Minecraft is played in so many ways, by so many people. So the opportunities are really, really endless.”
