With the finale of the second season of House of the Dragon approaching this week, fans of the show and the overall Game of Thrones universe might be feeling a bit sad. However, there's some good news! More details have been announced about a GOT spinoff series, and we now know who has been cast. In addition, production has already begun, so there’s definitely something to look forward to!
We have everything you need to know about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, including what’s it all about, the number of episodes, a tentative release date, and input from the main man himself, George R. R. Martin. We will keep updating this article as and when more information becomes available, so know that you’re in good hands!
A premiere date has not been announced as of yet, but we will update this information as soon as it is revealed. David Zaslav, CEO and president of Warner Bros. Discovery said that it will debut on Max in late 2025.
Over a hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones took place, two unlikely heroes roamed Westeros: a young and inexperienced but brave knight called Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire named Egg. The show is set in an era when the Targaryen dynasty had power over the Iron Throne, and people still clearly remember the majesty of the last dragon. Throughout the journey, the duo will form a strong friendship and will face powerful dynasties and equally powerful enemies.
Max has released a sneak peek of the first look at the show. Check it out here:
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight takes place about a century before Game of Thrones and 72 years after the events of House of the Dragon.
The title is based on a series of novellas by George R.R. Martin called Dunk and Egg. There are three short stories in the series so far, and the first one is titled The Hedge Knight. The second and the third books are titled "The Sworn Sword," and "The Mystery Knight," respectively.
Martin has revealed that he will write more Dunk and Egg installments, which means that the story of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will go beyond that of the already-published stories. Furthermore, the new show will be based on the legacies of Ser Duncan the Tall and King Aegon V Targaryen from "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series, as well as the GOT TV show.
George R.R. Martin and Ira Parker has written and executive-produced the series. Other executive producers include Ryan Condal, Vince Gerardis, Owen Harris, and Sarah Bradshaw. Harris (known for Black Mirror “San Junipero" episode) will direct the first three installments of the series, and Sarah Adina Smith (known for Apple TV+’s Lessons in Chemistry) will direct the other three.
Martin said that there will be six episodes for now, which means that it will be shorter than both the HOTD and GOT shows.
In this blog post, Martin explained why the series won't be called Dunk and Egg. He wrote, “I love Dunk and I love Egg, and I know that fans refer to my novellas as “the Dunk & Egg stories,” sure, but there are millions of people out there who do not know the stories and the title needs to intrigue them too. If you don’t know the characters, Dunk & Egg sounds like a sitcom. Laverne & Shirley. Abbott & Costello. Beavis & Butthead. So, no. We want “knight” in the title. Knighthood and chivalry are central to the themes of these stories.”
The series has officially begun production on June 18, 2024, and is being filmed in Belfast, Ireland.
