Who are the Couples Featured on Polyfamily?
PolyFamily follows two married couples—Alysia and Tyler Rodgers, and Sean and Taya Hartless—who have chosen to live together and raise a family as a “closed polyamorous quad.” That means they only date and are married within their group of four, without any outside partners.
Alysia and Tyler have been married for 11 years and entered the quad with two school-aged children. Since then, Alysia has given birth to a third child. Sean and Taya, married for six years, also expanded the family after joining the quad—Taya welcomed her first child and is expecting her second during season one.
Their unconventional dynamic includes cross-partner dating: Alysia is also in a relationship with Sean, and Tyler with Taya. Together, the quad navigates shared parenting, shifting relationship dynamics, and the challenges of maintaining emotional balance in a non-traditional family structure.
Is There a Trailer for Polyfamily?
TLC’s PolyFamily trailer gives an eye-opening first look at a bold new kind of family—two married couples living together, dating across marriages, raising kids as one. But things aren’t as seamless as they appear. As Sean puts it early on, “We are a closed polyamorous quad. A closed quad is four people. We’re only dating within ourselves and married within ourselves. We don’t have any outside partners.”
Tyler playfully adds, “Like everybody else, right?” Alysia reflects more seriously, “We never set out to live our lives like this, but we realized we could love more than one person and make our own rules as to what we want our family to look like.”
One of the biggest revelations? The quad intentionally doesn’t know who the father is of their younger kids—or the baby on the way. “Since the guys switch rooms every night, we don’t know who the fathers of the younger boys are,” Taya says, joking, “I can assure you, it is one of two people!”
Sean adds, “We feel very fortunate to give the kids double the love,” while Tyler admits, “Of course we wonder sometimes, but finding out could cause a lot of hurt.” But that’s just the beginning. The trailer also exposes serious strain between Sean and Tyler. “We live together. We have mutual partners. And we parent together,” Sean says before pausing. “But if we weren’t in this situation, we probably wouldn’t be friends.”
Their simmering tension boils over during a night out, with Tyler snapping, “You don’t need to parent me, I don’t need that.” Sean fires back, “Maybe if I was parenting you, s–t wouldn’t have happened.” Jealousy also creeps into the mix. Alysia confesses, “When it comes to Taya and Tyler, it almost looks like they are more in love than him and I. I can’t help but be jealous.”
She later breaks down in front of Sean, asking, “I don’t feel like we’re the same people we were in the beginning.” Sean responds, “Yeah, but do you want to work on it or not?” Then comes the trailer’s most shocking twist—Taya reveals, “I have something to share … I feel like I have a connection with someone else.” Tyler, stunned, replies, “It’s complicated to bring someone else in. We’re not closed at that point, we’re just not.”
