In G20, Viola Davis stars in a never-seen-before role- as a U.S. President, kicking butts and taking names. While the prolific actor has played multiple strong female characters in front of the camera, a famous one being in How to Get Away with Murder, this is different from them all.Â
The action-packed thriller follows U.S. President Danielle Sutton getting trapped by terrorists in a hotel with the leaders of 19 other member states during a G20 summit. The movie slowly reveals its secrets, but the one that stays till the end is about the mastermind behind this terrorist operation.Â
The question is- How did Rutledge even get access to a hotel where powerful world leaders would gather? In this article, we will reveal that and the major plot points of the film.
The U.S. President Danielle Sutton creates the Together Plan, which aims to eradicate world hunger by transferring electronic funds to poor countries. To make this a success, she requests the cooperation of the leaders of the G20 member countries. Her plan proves to be contentious because there are plenty of Americans who think that she needs to focus more on her own countrymen rather than donating to the African countries in need.Â
It is revealed that Rutledge and the U.S. President Danielle Sutton served together in the army. It was a traumatic experience for them both, but Sutton did benefit from it. During their time in Iraq, Danielle was photographed carrying a young boy out from a building in her arms after a terrorist attack.Â
Her photograph went viral and even earned her the cover of TIME magazine. Her heroics also helped her Presidential campaign get an edge over the other candidates. However, Danielle herself was uncomfortable with it because she had to rip the kid out from the arms of his dead mother to save him.Â
Rutledge was also in Fallujah when this photograph was taken, but all he got back from the campaign was trauma, which made him distrust the politicians who had sent soldiers like him to fight wars. He thought that American leaders were fooling the public by starting these conflicts and wars all over the globe.Â
He also says that Sutton is simply pretending to care about the poorer countries so that she can tax people more through her Together Plan. All so that she and her friends can pocket that money for themselves. Initially, it looks like Rutledge might be a complex character, but that soon gets trashed when his actual intentions are revealed.Â
Once Rutledge takes the world leaders hostage, he communicates to the citizens of the countries represented by the leaders that they need to withdraw their money from banks and invest it in cryptocurrency. Why? Because they can’t trust the financial institutions led by the people who are corrupt.Â
He recognizes that doing this will crash the markets but insists that people need to do this to take control of their lives instead of relying on self-serving politicians. How does he prove to the citizens that he is telling the truth about their leaders?Â
He makes the Prime Ministers and Presidents read some phrases, which in turn trains a powerful AI to create deep fakes that show the world leaders saying the things that Rutledge accuses them of- that they will use the Together Plan to rob the public. This leads to worldwide protests.Â
What he ultimately wants is to make money for himself by making people invest in cryptocurrency. He even stole the cryptocurrency wallet from Quoll, which had 70 million in it, but was planning to turn that money into billions.Â
Rutledge is definitely the main antagonist of the film, but Danielle Sutton realizes that it is her best friend, Joanna Worth, who betrayed her. This is because at the time of the presidential elections, Joanna had been a candidate as well. Back then, she had tried to dissuade voters from voting for Sutton by calling her a warmonger, but doing this had backfired as she had lost all support from her voter base.Â
Even though Danielle had put this incident behind her, Joanna couldn't get over her jealousy. So, when Rutledge informed her of his plan, she saw it as a great opportunity to promote herself as a capable president of the country.
In the end, Danielle and Rutledge clash inside a helicopter on the roof of the hotel. While it looks like they both met their end by falling into the sea, it’s revealed that Danielle never fell as she was able to hold onto the ledge. As for Rutledge, he plunged to his death. Also, the Together Plan also moves forward, and Sutton's popularity rises.
