Revelations follows Sung Min-chan, a pastor in a small provincial town who believes he has received a divine message identifying Kwon Yang-rae as the culprit behind an abduction. Consumed by his mission for justice, Min-chan wrestles between faith and vengeance. Meanwhile, Detective Lee Yeon-hui is assigned to the case, but her investigation is clouded by her own trauma—visions of her deceased sister, a victim of a brutal crime.
Director Yeon Sang-ho delves into the psychological depth of his characters, stating, “The story centers on the character psychologies of [Pastor] Sung Min-chan and [Detective] Lee Yeon-hui, who resemble one another but make very different choices.” (via Tudum)
He added, “I wanted to create a story about a lead character with egocentric views, someone who sees and believes only what he wants to. I was thinking of such a character through whom I could create a story within the genre, and Sung Min-chan, a pastor of a new church, was born.”
Netflix describes Min-chan as a man torn between “sincere faith and cruel reality” while he relentlessly pursues Yang-rae. Yeon-hui, on the other hand, remains determined to uncover the truth despite the weight of her past. As their paths collide, the film explores the fine line between conviction and obsession.
Bringing the characters from the comic to life required a powerhouse cast. Director Yeon Sang-ho praised Ryu Jun-yeol’s dedication, stating, “Ryu Jun-yeol is an actor with exceptional acting skills. After working with him for this film, I got the feeling that this skill is based not on intuitive methodology but on a deep understanding of the work. And he’s an artist who, to perfect his understanding of his character, asks an infinite number of questions to himself and to the creators.” (via Tudum)
Both Yeon and screenwriter Choi Gyu-seok felt the actors added new layers to their original characters. Choi highlighted Shin Hyun-been’s portrayal, saying, “Shin Hyun-been’s Lee Yeon-hui is a tragic figure. Lee Yeon-hui in the comic was sharp and stoic, but in the film, she is imbued with sadness that could crush her at any moment.”
Meanwhile, Shin Min-jae’s take on Kwon Yang-rae left a lasting impression, with Choi remarking, “Shin Min-jae’s Kwon Yang-rae seems like someone who just emerged from the fires of hell.”
The official trailer for Revelations, introduces viewers to a gripping narrative centered around Pastor Min-chan, portrayed by Ryu Jun-yeol. The trailer opens with an urgent report: "What's your emergency? You know Kwon Hyang-rae, the rapist who lives in the area."
As the tension escalates, Detective Yeon-hui is introduced, investigating a missing middle school girl. The trailer hints at a complex relationship between Min-chan and Kwon Hyang-rae, with Yeon-hui suspecting a deeper connection. She remarks, "There are no coincidences," suggesting intertwining fates.
The visuals are dark and atmospheric, reflecting the film's intense themes of faith, guilt, and redemption. Quick cuts showcase confrontations, chases, and moments of introspection, building anticipation for the film's release. The trailer concludes with a chilling note, hinting at the moral dilemmas and suspense that await viewers.

The teaser trailer for Revelations sets an ominous tone, blending psychological suspense with a gripping mystery. It opens with a chilling phone call reporting the disappearance of Shin A-yeong, a teenage girl who regularly attended Pastor Min-chan’s church. Shortly after, Min-chan encounters a new churchgoer, Kwon Yang-rae, an ex-convict.
When Min-chan receives what he believes to be divine guidance, he becomes convinced that Yang-rae is responsible for the girl's disappearance, pushing him toward a dangerous pursuit. Tensions escalate as Detective Lee Yeon-hui is assigned to the case. Haunted by the memory of her deceased sister, Yeon-hui begins to suspect a deeper connection between Min-chan and Yang-rae.
The teaser hints at her growing doubts, culminating in a haunting moment where she whispers, “She says she waited for me to be rescued.” As the lines between truth and delusion blur, the investigation takes a darker turn, forcing Yeon-hui to confront her own past while untangling the mystery before her.
Visually, the teaser is soaked in suspense, with eerie lighting, ominous whispers, and lingering close-ups heightening the film’s unsettling atmosphere. The tagline, “Madness begins with twisted faith,” flashes across the screen, reinforcing the film’s central theme—where faith, guilt, and obsession intertwine.
Revelations began filming in early April 2024 and wrapped in early August 2024.
Director Yeon Sang-ho, known for his sharp social commentary and gripping narratives, reunites with writer Choi Gyu-seok for Revelations, an upcoming South Korean thriller. The duo previously collaborated on Hellbound, and this time, they adapt their 2022 comic of the same name into a chilling psychological drama.
Unlike Yeon’s past works that blend fantasy and horror, Revelations takes a more grounded approach. “Many of the live-action films I’ve worked on deal with surreal themes in fantasy worlds,” Yeon told Tudum. “But this time, I ruled out fantasy elements as much as possible. I wanted to depict psychological elements that can be found in reality, such as illusions, delusions, and traumas.”
Choi added, “Director Yeon Sang-ho suggested creating a story about faith and beliefs, the themes that have interested him for a long time. I was intrigued and thought that we could come up with a fascinating story.”
WOW POINT, the production company behind The Bequeathed and Parasyte: The Grey, is producing Revelations, continuing its partnership with Netflix. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón joins as an executive producer, marking a significant partnership for the film.
Alfonso Cuarón’s involvement underscores the film’s ambition, with Yeon recalling, “I showed him the first edited version, and I remember him saying that he didn’t want to watch it on a computer monitor. He made a point of watching it in a screening room. [He’s] a creator who truly shows respect for the director’s vision.”
Yeon also expressed admiration for Cuarón, saying, “Alfonso Cuarón, known for masterpieces like Children of Men and Gravity, has greatly influenced my work as a director. I am thrilled at this opportunity to collaborate with him on shaping Revelations, and I have high expectations for our partnership.” (via Netflix)
