What is the Plot of Home Is Where The Heart Is?

Home Is Where the Heart Is takes a unique approach to home renovation, focusing on families who have inherited or have a deep emotional connection to their homes. Rather than just modernizing spaces, the show preserves each home’s history, blending past and present to create meaningful living spaces that reflect the family’s story.

Luke Macfarlane and designer Olivia Westbrooks lead the transformations, ensuring that every renovation honors the home's legacy while bringing it up to date. Unlike traditional home makeover shows, Home Is Where the Heart Is prioritizes storytelling over aesthetics. “We’re not just putting wallpaper up—that wallpaper has a certain significance,” executive producer Jessica Sebastian-Dayeh explaines. Macfarlane, who also executive produces, is hands-on in every project, crafting personalized woodwork for each family. “The process of getting to know somebody by drawing them out is always so much deeper,” he says. Westbrooks echoed this sentiment during the 2025 SCAD TVfest, emphasizing the show’s personal touch: “It feels like a hug… it tells the human story.” (via Blavity)

The emotional depth of the series is what sets it apart. Sebastian-Dayeh, who personally understands the value of a home after losing hers in the L.A. wildfires, hopes the show inspires viewers to cherish their own family spaces. “Your home really is where your heart is, because of the memories that are attached to it,” she says.

Macfarlane, stepping into the unscripted world, is excited about what’s to come, adding, “I want to show people how things are actually built… people are really interested in understanding value.” With a people-first approach, Home Is Where the Heart Is isn’t just about renovations—it’s about preserving history, honoring memories, and turning houses into heartfelt homes.

Who’s Hosting Home Is Where The Heart Is?

Luke Macfarlane, best known for his Hallmark movies, hosts Home Is Where the Heart Is alongside designer Olivia Westbrooks.

With a deep passion for woodworking and home renovation—sparked by his architect grandfather—Macfarlane brings a personal touch to each project. In every episode, he and Westbrooks transform cherished but timeworn homes, preserving their history while giving them a fresh new look.

Home renovation shows have a unique sort of thing in that you’re always trying to get the audience through the entire episode,” he explained. (via Blavity)

He further added, “And no matter what, no matter if it’s daytime television or primetime television, a built-in sort of thing about home design shows—you wanna see the before and you wanna see the after. So when Hallmark said they wanted to design, I think we were always like, but how can we do it for you guys, because they want that. People watch design shows through the end because they want to see what it looks like. So the unique challenge for Hallmark was like how do we do that within the Hallmark sort of framework.
