Severance season 2 episode 9, titled The After Hours, covered a lot of ground. From Devon and Harmony taking Mark to the Damona Birthing Retreat to Burt taking Irving and his dog to the train station, the plotlines for multiple characters were moved along. In this article, we will discuss all of these.

Miss Huang Graduates from her Wintertide Fellowship

Milchick informs Eustice Huang that she is moving to the Gunnel Eagan Empathy Center in Svalbard after her Wintertide Fellowship, where she will be working to form “global reforms.” Huang is shocked since she thought that she would be working on the severed floor till the end of the quarter.

But Milchick doesn’t pay attention to any of it. She completes her duties and at the end of the day moves to her new position. However, there’s one last thing she has to do- as the handbook says, she has to give up her ring toss game as a material sacrifice since it’s a totem.

She smashes the game again and again as Milchick commands her to destroy everything inside.

Irving and his dog Leave in Severance Season 2 Episode 9

Burt shows up at Irving’s house and tells him to go for a ride with him. It’s interesting that he requests this when he reads Irving’s notes on Lumon, where he calls them violent people. Burt doesn’t tell him to pack or even take anything for this road trip. But the dog does come along.

During the drive, Burt reveals that he just drove people around to their destination and never wanted to know what happened to them after they arrived there. They also talked about love and how they couldn’t be together under the circumstances they were in.

His words seemed to foreshadow that something bad was going to happen to Irving. However, that didn’t happen, and Burt instead took him to the train station. He also said that it’s better if Irving forgets their affair. So, why did Burt make Irving leave? Maybe because he didn’t want to jeopardize his marriage with Fields.

Also, since he was snooping on Irving for Drummond, maybe he wanted Irving to leave rather than get killed by Fields.

Jame Accuses Helly of Trickery

In Severance season 2 episode 9, Jame told Helly that he didn’t like the way she was running things at Lumon. After all, Cold Harbor wasn’t completed and Irving had left. Also, a major part of the season was about Helena spending her time as Helly with Innie Mark so that slowed down multiple plans as well.

He said that Helly had tricked him. But why did he feel tricked? And why did he only accuse Helly of tricking him and not Helena? Is it just because he is old and doesn’t care whether he is talking with an Innie or Outie? It will be interesting to see what happens next.

Innie Dylan Resigns in Severance Season 2 Episode 9

Gretchen confessed to Outie Dylan that she had had an affair with Innie Dylan. This creeped out the former, and he wanted to resign from Lumon, which would have erased Innie Dylan. Gretchen also told Innie Dylan about this, and he wasn’t happy about this either.

In response to her talking about putting an end to their relationship, he pulled out a crude ring made of wood carvings and proposed. Gretchen rejected Innie Dylan’s proposal, and so he decided to resign because he felt that life was meaningless. Helly tried to convince him to stay to complete the mission that Irving had given him through his notes.

But none of that worked, and he submitted his resignation form. While we do see him entering the elevator, it isn’t shown if Lumon allowed him to leave. After all, resigning from that place isn’t easy, especially without the consent of the Outie.

Innie Mark Meets Harmony

Partially reintegrated Mark and Devon meet Harmony to figure out how to find Gemma. Harmony hints that completing the Cold Harbor would erase Gemma and this makes Mark take a day off. They head to the Damona Birthing Retreat where Harmony tells the guard that she was taking a woman (Devon) to Jame.

When Marks gets into one of the cabins, he changes into his innie, who doesn’t understand what’s happening. He tries to leave, but Devon stops him and tells him to talk to Harmony about Gemma, his outie’s wife who is alive and is being tortured.

There’s something very interesting about this ending- Devon wasn’t actually pregnant with Jame’s child, but one theory is swirling around thanks to his revelation- is Mark the result of one of Jame’s affairs? Is Harmony lying?
