What is Adolescence About?
Adolescence follows the story of 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who is arrested for the murder of his classmate, a teenage girl who goes to his school. Vanity Fair writes about the show, "The show threads incel culture into the broader panic over male rage, digital isolation, and desires warped by algorithms. It nails both adult theorizing and the stark disconnect any parent of a teen knows too well."
Stephen Graham, who co-created this limited series, and plays the father, Eddie Miller, said in an interview with Netflix, “One of our aims was to ask, ‘What is happening to our young men these days, and what are the pressures they face from their peers, from the internet, and from social media?’ And the pressures that come from all of those things are as difficult for kids here as they are the world over.”
He also said that the idea came to him over the past decade as there has been an epidemic of knife crimes among young boys throughout the country. “And for me, there were certain instances that really stuck out where young boys - and they are young boys, you know, they're not men - were killing young girls.” (via What to Watch)
He also explained that people tend to blame the mum and dad when something like this happens, but he wanted to explore a different avenue- “Instead, we wanted you to look at this family and think, ‘My God. This could be happening to us!’ And what’s happening here is an ordinary family’s worst nightmare.”
Regarding his character, he said, “I play a man called Eddie, who's just a normal father. You know, he's a hard-working man. He's got his own business. He's a grafter, he’s raising his family and doing the best that he can, and then suddenly his whole world is rocked by something that his son is accused of.”
What does ‘Filmed in one Continuous shot’ mean?
The four episodes of Adolescence are filmed in one continuous shot. Producer Philip Barantini explained in an interview with Tudum what it is. He said, “Basically, that means we press record on the camera and we don’t press stop until the very end of the hour. But it’s much more complicated than it sounds.”
He further explained, “It takes months of preparation and weeks of rehearsals and an incredible team of people to pull it off at every stage, from the script to the locations to the production design to where exactly the camera is going to be able to shoot and from what angle.”
Actor and co-creator Stephen Graham also said, “The four episodes have been filmed almost like a play. Without sounding pretentious, it's the marriage of both mediums. It technically is a play, and it’s the most zen I’ve ever been, because it's naturalism and we are playing to the camera. We spent a whole week rehearsing as actors with Phil, and we went through every beat, through every moment, piece by piece.”(via What to Watch)
The star also revealed that they worked with the “choreography of the camera” that was already designed by the time the actors arrived. So, they had to figure out how to move around the spaces since it had to be “seamless and continuous.” He said that the process was “wonderful” and he loved how he could immerse into the character from “as soon as we say ‘action’, to as soon as we say ‘cut’.”

Adolescence Trailer
The trailer begins with the police suddenly breaking into the home of the Miller family and taking away Jamie, their 13-year-old kid. He maintains that he has done nothing. What follows is a harrowing police interrogation, where the officers ask him about a girl called Katie Leonard.
The trailer also gets into the core of the story the makers are trying to tell. One school boy says to his father, “You’re not getting it. Dad, your’re not reading what they’re doing. It’s a call to action by the manosphere. 80% of women are attracted to 20% of men. You must trick them cause you’ll never get them in a normal way.”
