Long Bright River is a suspense thriller that follows Amanda Seyfried’s Mickey, a Philadelphia police officer entrusted with patrolling a neighborhood hit by the opioid crisis. However, an already bad situation becomes worse when the neighborhood becomes engulfed in a series of murders.
What initially seem to be unconnected deaths of sex workers soon make Mickey realize something- that they might all be related to her personal history, especially her missing little sister. Long Bright River has been described by showrunner Nikki Toscano as a “moving love story between two sisters.”
She revealed in an interview with Peacock, “The challenge of adapting this moving love story between two sisters as it elegantly weaves between the past and the present was thrilling, particularly as the history of this family’s past holds a critical key in solving the murder-mystery that unfolds in the present.”
Additionally, she talked about the stereotypes the show is aiming to upend, including, “of those born into poverty and addiction, of those engaging in sex work, of those who have been written off or marginalized after they’ve seemingly fallen through the cracks of their community, and finally, of those engaged in police work.”
The showrunner also explained that what made Long Bright River an unique project was its attempt to “deconstruct the 'police as savior' narrative.”
Yes, Long Bright River is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Liz Moore. She is also a co-creator and executive producer on the show. In an interview with Peacock, she talked about her inspiration for writing the book:
“I could say that the first seed of the novel was planted in 2009, when I first set foot in Kensington – a tight-knit, vibrant neighborhood in Philadelphia that has become very dear to me, and that is often misunderstood and misrepresented in the national media.”
She also talked about the other facets of her life where she drew inspiration from, revealing, “I could say that the first seed was planted by my own family's history of addiction, which has spanned many generations and has been a topic of conversation among us since well before I was born. I could say that being a sister inspired Long Bright River, or living in the city of Philadelphia. Really, it's a mix of all of these.”
The trailer for Long Bright River begins with a somber atmosphere as Mickey says that a lot of the girls she went to elementary school with are now into sex work. Initially, she just tries to do her job as a patrol officer, but when women start getting murdered, she gets drawn into a web of conspiracy.
The trailer hints that something similar might have happened to her younger sister Kacey, who has been missing for way too long this time. While others tell Mickey to let her go, she becomes hellbent on finding her. Along the way, she might find the killer as well. Also, if one woman is right, then Mickey might know the man who is behind it all.
