Release date & Where to Watch

All eight episodes of Shared Custody will be available for streaming on Hulu starting Friday, Feb. 28, 2025. The series was released globally on Disney+ on Jan. 24, 2025.

What is Shared Custody About?

Shared Custody follows Cris and Diego, a couple who have recently separated but are committed to maintaining an amicable relationship for the sake of their young daughter. 

With plans to navigate their divorce without lawyers, they try to stay friends while co-parenting. However, the reality of living apart proves much harder than expected when financial difficulties force them to move back in with their respective parents.

The series explores the complexities of modern co-parenting over eight episodes, delving into the challenges Cris and Diego face as they attempt to balance their personal lives and responsibilities. 

What initially begins as a civil and mutual separation quickly unravels as the couple grapples with the difficulties of living with their meddling parents. The result is a blend of humor and tension as family dynamics become more complicated.

Camila Jiménez-Villa, co-founder and CEO of The Immigrant, shared insights with Variety about the series: "Juanjo Moscardó Ruiz came to us with an idea—a deeply personal story inspired by his own breakup, blending drama and humor in a very real way. The success of the show would hinge on its execution, from the scripts to the production." 

Reflecting on the cinematic quality, she continued, “Shared Custody maintains the high-end visual storytelling of The Immigrant’s productions, with Javier Fesser’s direction emphasizing dynamic pacing and emotional depth that makes the series as relatable as it is visually captivating.”

Is There a Trailer for Shared Custody?

In the Shared Custody trailer, we meet Cris and Diego, a separated couple navigating the complexities of shared custody while attempting to maintain a cordial relationship for the sake of their five-year-old daughter. However, things quickly take a turn as both characters are forced to move back in with their parents, leading to an increasingly awkward living situation.

One of the most cringe-worthy moments in the trailer sees Adriana Ozores’ character walking in on her son while he’s on the toilet, a scene that emphasizes the strain their new living arrangements are placing on everyone involved.

As the trailer progresses, the tension builds with both López and Farré struggling to adjust to their new circumstances, highlighting the humorous yet difficult journey of uncoupling and co-parenting. The trailer offers a mix of comedic and uncomfortable moments, showing how the characters’ attempts to remain amicable in their separation are challenged by the realities of living with family again.

Behind the Scenes

The series Shared Custody is directed by Javier Fesser. Written by Juanjo Moscardó Rius, Fesser directs a project that marks his first experience working with someone else’s material. This is also The Immigrant production company's first series outside of Spain, following their success with films like the Crystal Bear-winning Adolfo and ViX’s Ella Camina Sola and Todo lo que Fuimos.

In an interview with Deadline, Camila Jiménez-Villa, co-founder of The Immigrant, shared insights about Fesser’s involvement, noting, “It was the first time he had directed somebody else’s material — he is notoriously difficult to attach to projects.” 

Despite this, Jiménez-Villa explained that the collaboration had a positive impact, with Fesser describing it as one of the most rewarding experiences of his career. He added that not writing the script gave him freedom as a director.

Fesser was drawn to the characters in Shared Custody, saying, “I saw myself reflected perfectly in their greatness and in their miseries. I was moved by their conflicts and laughed out loud with all of them, and I was very attracted to the tone of the proposal. I did not imagine that such a real drama could finally be so funny. How wonderful to do comedy without jokes.” (via Deadline)

Sofía Fábregas, Vice President of Original Production at Disney+ Spain, praised Fesser’s ability to balance humor and emotion, commenting, “Fesser has a special ability to extract humor from the most unexpected situations and move the audience with his humanity and tenderness."
